Passive Safety Electronics Design Release Engineer


The Role

We are looking for a highly motivated engineer who is driven to deliver innovative products that keep our customers safe.   Must be a self-starter and must work effectively cross-functionally.  Working as a Passive Safety Design Release Engineer (DRE) can provide one with a strong foundation of leadership skills.  The Passive Safety DRE is responsible for definition of requirements, execution of design, analysis, development, testing and management of engineering projects for Passive Safety Components where creativity, initiative and independent judgment are involved.  Additionally, the Passive Safety DRE provides technical direction over a Product Development Team consisting of engineers and engineering support personnel.  Passive Safety Components include: Automatic Occupant Sensing, Sensing and Diagnostic Module, Electronic Satellite Sensors, and Pedestrian Protection Sensors. Responsible for the technical project management and design release of a passive safety system.  This includes: managing supplier timing; running PDT meetings; issue investigation and resolution; ensuring part and/or software deliveries to benches, vehicles, and assembly plants; etc.


  • Integrate sensing devices into the vehicle subsystems including seating.

  • Create and maintain Interface Control Design (ICD) strategy and ICD templates

  • Develop & Maintain commodity specific documentation.

  • Generate and Maintain Global subsystem/component technical specifications templates. (SSTS/CTS)

  • Lead resolution of technical issues

  • "Close the Loop" on learnings by updating required information (Best Practices, GM Specifications, Statement of Requirements, Template, etc.) and document progress in Problem Resolution Tracking System.

  • Work cross-functionally within GM, coordinating multiple suppliers.

  • Lead/manage supplier resident engineers

  • Support sourcing activities

  • Generate technical solutions for current, new and major programs

  • Perform complex design analysis

  • Initiate documents to provide engineering authority and to maintain math/CAD data

  • Work with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and to support build programs

Additional Description


  • BS in Engineering, Physics, Math, or Computer Science

  • 2+ years of related experience

  • Knowledge of microcontroller architectures, memory technologies, and programming.

  • High level understanding of hardware design and failure modes in electronic modules.

  • In-depth knowledge of vehicle serial data communications.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in writing and comprehending software/hardware requirements.

  • High level knowledge of software verification/validation processes.

  • In-depth knowledge of embedded software development, testing and associated tools.

  • In-depth knowledge of software algorithm design and software architecture.

  • Capability to translate text based functional requirements into software algorithms and models.

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult

  • 5+ years of related work experience

  • DFMEA training

  • Engineering Change Management Experience

  • Electronic Validation Experience

  • DFSS Black Belt Certification

  • Vehicle Communication Tool Experience

  • Software Controls/wiring experience

  • Design/Development of Safety Critical Systems/Components
