Physical Architecture Lead

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.
  • This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week

The Role

The Physical Architecture Lead is responsible to drive the proper allocation and to manage the superset of physical architecture interfaces for VIP and SDV Phase 2 ensuring that the allocation of the physical interfaces is aligned with the functional/software allocation strategies planned for our global architectures. The Physical Architecture Lead needs to drive that observing all GM business imperatives (safety, security, software flexibility, hw/sw engineering resources, mass, cost, etc) while enabling flexibility, scalability and robustness of the architecture to prevent architecture capabilities runaway.

Responsibilities

  • Define the correct physical and functional partitioning and allocation of hardware I/O and functions/software in an optimized set of controllers for both VIP and SDV Phase 2.

  • Review architecture needs and/or proposals from different architecture or system engineering stakeholders across the company and balance all these requests into an optimum configuration that can serve all purposes in an intelligent and efficient manner.

  • Define and manage the overall VIP and SDV Phase 2 architecture topology, specifying all networks and components allocation to different networks observing all requirements (e.g. safety and redundancy) and constraints concerning network bandwidth and vehicle integration.

  • Define and manage the superset of logicals/mechanizations to support all required components present in GM Global Architectures (VIP and SDV Phase 2).

  • Engage in ATWs and early architecture discussions for new/future features to influence and ensure that the right decisions are made observing all imperatives, requirements and constraints.

  • Create and/or Perform logicals/mechanizations mark-ups to represent agreements on architecture designs to support required features/interfaces and review those with all stakeholders (Tech Specialists, System Owners, Safety Representatives, etc).

  • Review final implementation of the mark-ups into the logicals / mechanizations before release to ensure they are accurate, represent properly all the physical connectivity variants using engineering content options, and are free of ambiguity for the downstream customers (PSDS – Power and Signal Distribution Systems team).

  • Host Physical Architecture TRB’s with all Program Architects in the PSDS team to ensure awareness and understanding of the new physical interfaces requirements and applicability to programs.

  • Stay abreast of current technologies and benchmarking data to ensure GM electrical architecture decisions will leverage state-of-the-art solutions.


Additional Description

Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, or Computer Science

  • 5+ years of experience in Electrical Architecture

  • Have in-depth knowledge of all vehicle systems / sub-systems

  • Have hardware knowledge to understand the implications of I/O types and allocation

  • Have enough functional/software knowledge to understand serial data and software implications of physical allocation decisions.

  • Have in-depth knowledge or experience in vehicle integration issues concerning packaging and wiring to balance these against the physical architecture allocation decisions.

Desired Skills

  • Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering

  • 10+ years of experience in Electrical Architecture

  • 5+ Additional experience either in Systems Engineering, Power Distribution or Controller Hardware Design/Release or a combination of those.

  • SAFe Certification
