Product Owner - VMEC Transmission Controls

Remote: This position does not require the employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work off-site on a permanent basis.

The Role:

VMEC Transmission Controls has an opening for a Product Owner.  VMEC, Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls, is a production level group that supports the definition, design and development of transmission control systems, diagnostics, and embedded controller communication.  In this role, you will directly impact the GM vehicles that drive down the road! We are seeking creative, highly motivated, agile thinkers with passion and expertise in Controls with great attention to detail.   The selected candidate will lead the development of controls and software work within the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) using appropriate common methods for Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC) features and lead the growth in capability of controls and software methods to keep General Motors at the forefront of technology in these areas.  In the role of Product Owner, you will be collaborating with several other areas of engineering and the business (Engineering Stakeholders, Customers and the Product Management Team) to breakdown technical solutions into workable and deliverable chunks. This role requires a balanced mix of high levels of technical engineering skills and leadership skills, where you will have a high level of responsibility with limited formal authority, providing excellent opportunities for developing and honing the skill of influencing others!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Scrum Team’s content

  • Collaborate with the Program Management Team to refine the Program Vision, Roadmap and Program Backlog

  • Collaborate with System Architect to determine Enablers and coordinate Enabler Rollout

  • Coordinate dependencies with other Product Owners when deliverables are dependent on other Teams for completion, attending PO synchronizations as needed

  • Refine, maintain and prioritize the Team Backlog

  • Work closely with Scrum Team Leader to ascertain Team capacity

  • Translate product and feature strategy into User Stories, assisting Scrum Team with Story definition, estimation and sequencing for Program Increment Planning events

  • Work day-to-day with the Scrum Teams clarifying requirements, constantly communicating and gaining alignment around Feature or Product Strategy

  • Provide clearly defined acceptance criteria to enable Behavior Driven (BDD) and Test-Driven Development (TDD)

  • Provide guidance for System Demonstration Strategy during Story creation (unit, integration and system level test strategy)

  • Verify Stories are testable and can be used to generate testing objectives

  • Ensure validation and testing of features occurs prior to End User Acceptance

  • Ensure the technical integrity of the product is maintained and enable the solution to address program priorities (Features and Enablers), thoroughly addressing anomalies and other quality concerns in a timely manner

  • Accept each story and participate in Team Demonstrations and Retrospectives to validate quality, providing feedback to team and improving team processes

  • Validate that Stories meet their pre-determined acceptance criteria, have appropriate, persistent Acceptance tests, and otherwise comply with Definition of Done (DoD) 

  • Participate in the following Team and Program Events:  Program Increment Planning, Iteration Retrospectives, ART Inspection and Adapt sessions, PO/ART Synchronizations

  • Provide guidance and coaching to Scrum Team members

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

  • Participate in the Product Owner Community of Practice and drive process improvements and innovations in how work is done


Additional Description

Minimum Required Skills and Experience:

  • BS in Engineering in the disciplinary areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience with demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area required

  • Experience with vehicle motion systems (e.g. engine, transmission, hybrid, electrification, battery, chassis controls and/or integration), with particular emphasis on automatic transmission control systems

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to plan and prioritize work to deliver required business objectives on time with quality

  • Ability to set and balance priorities efficiently

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with autonomy and accountability for results

  • Proficient oral and written communication skills

  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed

  • Strong partnership and teamwork skills, with demonstrated ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment

  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, take initiative/self-directed

  • Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability and trust

  • Consistent demonstration of innovative thinking that is customer-centric

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • MS in Engineering in the disciplinary areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

  • SAFe Product Owner/Program Manager certification

  • SAFe for Teams certification

  • DFSS Certification; Black Belt preferred

  • Expertise with GM Embedded Controls tool chain including IBM Rational Team Concert

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink modeling.

FOR GM INTERNAL CANDIDATES: This role is posted at both the 6th and 7th level. The determination by HR and the Hiring Manager as to whether an offer will be lateral or promotional will be based on a candidate’s relevant experience and whether the role will amount to a significant increase in level of responsibility.

Compensation : This position may be filled with a senior level or mid-career professional.  The median salary / compensation for both roles are as follows:  

Senior Career Professional – Median salary is $109,283

Mid-Career Professional – Median salary is $88,667 

Bonus Potential : An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
