Project Engineer-High Voltage Battery Electrical Integration and Release Engineer

Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

  • This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week

Role Summary

As part of GM push to be recognized as a technology company, several new proposed electrification projects are in process. Candidates will get the opportunity to work in new non-automotive GM projects. This exciting new area offers a broad assortment of career development.

The Battery Electrical Integration and Release Engineer is responsible for the design and executing the electrical system of a high voltage battery pack.  They are involved with the latest battery technology in General Motors electrified vehicles portfolio for both current and future vehicles. They will work with a high-performance team and will be responsible for the design and packaging of battery electrical components.  The Battery Electrical Integration and Release Engineer will directly affect the quality, durability and performance of future hybrid, plugin and battery electric vehicles manufactured by GM.

This job is based in General Motor’s Warren Technical Center and will work with GM’s Global Battery Systems Lab. The lab is a state of the art facility operates 24/7, covers 85,000 square-feet on the Warren Tech Center campus, and has capabilities to test 112 battery packs and 120 battery cells at a time.  The General Motors Technical Center has been named a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The campus opened in 1956 and houses the GM vehicle engineering center, design center, research and manufacturing engineering.  It is the workplace of over 18,000 employees on a 1.1 square-mile campus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, layout and packaging of battery electrical system

  • Work with Designers to ensure interface and packaging compatibility both internally and externally

  • Work with component owners to select appropriate electrical components.  Reuse parts where appropriate

  • Work with manufacturing to ensure build ability and to determine quality requirements

  • Work to support manufacturing in root cause,

  • Create the initial wire harness routing

  • Create and gain cross-functional agreement on Interface Documents

  • Work with other Design Release Engineers to execute the Electrical System design

  • Support purchasing in sourcing of components

  • Oversee and support DFMEA and Design Reviews Based on Test Results (DRBTR)

  • Resolve electrical validation issues and review validation results

  • Manage change control

  • Chair the battery Electrical System PDT

  • Work with the Rechargeable Energy Storage System (RESS) Lead Design Release Engineer to execute optimal RESS design

  • Provide and manage component timing plan

  • Execute and support Peer Reviews per program milestones

  • Work with component suppliers to meet design and timing objectives


Additional Description

Requirements

  • B.S. in Engineering, Math, Physics, Chemistry or Computer Science

  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience

  • Proficient computer skills including analyzing data, creating presentations

  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of automotive energy storage systems

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are complex

  • Time management skills to meet agreed upon customer deliverables, able to manage multiple projects

  • Interpersonal styles and communication skills to work effectively with local and international team members

  • Technical writing ability to create written engineering evaluation reports

  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering drawings and specifications

  • Familiarity with CAD and CAE

Desired Skills

  • Master’s degree in Engineering

  • 5+ Years’ experience with a major automotive OEM

  • Experience in Electrical System design (wiring, interconnects, bus bars, etc.)

  • High voltage or electrified vehicle safety training and hands on work experience

  • Design for Six Sigma Certification

  • Experience with Unigraphics NX

  • Experience in structural, thermal, electrical analysis
