Propulsion Controls Researcher


Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

Who You Are

As a Propulsion Controls Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will be at the forefront of Propulsion Controls innovation through next-gen ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish technical plans. You'll conduct research and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas being developed. You will write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research. What You Do

Envision, develop and demonstrate industry-leading propulsion control and diagnostic technologies that lead to a quantum leap in sustainable mobility through improved efficiency, reduced harmful emissions and superior vehicle performance. We need your dedication to work on electrified propulsion controls, especially advanced battery management system, which is essential to enhance the safety and performance of our BEVs. In addition:

  • Develop next-generation control and diagnostic algorithms for electrified propulsion systems, including batteries, motors, and drive units, etc.

  • Develop math models and simulation of propulsion systems to facilitate a computer-aided control system design environment that enables an acceleration of the vehicle development process

  • Develop rapid prototyping controllers, including their software, for test cells and advanced technology demonstration vehicles

  • Conduct experiments in dynamometer test cells and at proving ground facilities

  • Manage relationships with divisional staffs and development partners to meet project objectives

  • Lead technical discussions and reviews as a specialist in propulsion controls technology

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments affecting areas of responsibility

Additional Description

What You Need

  • PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive, or Aerospace Engineering specialized in Controls OR

  • Masters Degree in same area of interest AND 5+ years industry experience in advanced development

  • Strong background in control theory, system modeling & simulation, and control system design methodology

  • Knowledge of microprocessor-based control system software and hardware development

  • Knowledge of control system simulation and rapid control prototyping tools (e.g., Matlab, SIMULINK, dSPACE, etc.)

What Would Be Even Better

  • R&D experience in developing Battery Management System

  • PhD AND 3+ years industry experience
