Research Engineer – PoC Implementations, Benches and Prototypes


Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

Who We Are

The Architecture and Security R&D team carries out research projects for vehicle electrical architectures, software architectures, in-vehicle communication systems and cybersecurity. Many of these projects benefit from early prototypes and bench implementations that enable researchers to run experiments, do proof of concepts, or demonstrate the value of an innovation to leadership.

This role contributes to the broader corporate objective of moving to the next generation of GM's electrical architecture known as Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP). VIP provides plenty of bandwidth and processing power, robust cybersecurity, and enables GM’s publicly announced Ultify software platform .

Who You Are

As the team’s research engineer you will be crafting, building, and implementing benches. These benches typically consist of several computing units with operating systems, automotive infrastructure software and application specific software that communicate via in-vehicle communication systems and with edge/cloud platforms and are instrumented by hardware and software enabling measurements.

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Build bench plans in close collaboration with R&D project leads. Plan, budget, and purchase required hardware, software, and tools

  • Design, develop and test application specific bench software

  • Build and instrument benches to enable experiments and measurements. Craft the design and implementation of experiments, summarize results, and enable demonstration to various audiences

  • Develop strategies for developing bench components and software that can be used in multiple settings for a variety of research projects

  • Oversee and manage the Architecture and Security team’s lab space

What You Need

First and foremost, you'll need a high level of energy and a relentless desire to build, implement and innovate. Remember, it is impossible to be an expert on everything. However, if you have deep expertise in several of these areas, then apply today!

Other than that:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in developing software with C, C++, C#, Python, Java or similar

  • Experience in working in bench settings, with developing entirely new code and maintaining existing code

  • Experience with various communication systems and network protocols (e.g. TCP/IP protocol suite, diagnostic protocols, quality of service guarantees, Ethernet, CAN, CAN-FD, LIN)

  • Programming experience in relevant OS environments like QNX, or Linux and sound understanding of operating system concepts

  • General familiarity with concepts such as security implementation, diagnostics, parallel programming, and distributed computing, debugging, and logging

  • Efficient in developing algorithms and data structures

  • Independent and quick learning skills to use and work with new software tools

What Would Be Even Better

  • Master's Degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in developing software with C, C++, C#, Python, Java or similar

  • Automotive SW architectures and middleware

  • (Classic & Adaptive AUTOSAR, Service Oriented Architectures, Containers, Hypervisors)

  • Service oriented in-vehicle communication and IoT protocols

  • (SOME/IP, DDS, MQTT, pub/sub and discovery)

  • Experience with a variety of computing platforms including deeply embedded real time systems, high performance compute and accelerators, SoCs

  • Experience with working in research settings / with research teams
