Research Engineer


Onsite: This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis

What you do

As a valued member of the Battery Cell Systems Research Lab team at GM R&D you will support the development of advanced battery technologies for automotive applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for lab-scale and pilot level advanced battery cell fabrication and cell testing. The position will offer the opportunities to collaborate internally with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers, while also working collaboratively with external partners and suppliers.

Who you are

  • Provide technical and industry expertise in battery cell fabrication

  • Develop detail-level work plan for advanced battery component preparation and cell fabrication

  • Initiate process/equipment modification to support the advance battery system development

  • Operate equipments for battery component preparation and cell fabrication

  • Operate Instruments for component and cell quality control

  • Build and maintain the data base/records for component and cell making

  • Support novel cell design

  • Support the team for various component and cell fabrication projects

  • Support technical root cause analysis and resolution of issues found during testing

  • Compile test results and support test report development

Additional Description

What you need

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field (i.e. chemistry, chemical, electrical or mechanical engineering or a related subject) or equivalent experience

  • Hand-on experience with battery cell and cell component fabrication/manufacture process (e.g. slurry mixing, electrode coating, electrode calendaring, winding/stacking, etc.)

  • Experience with auto- or semi-auto battery cell fabrication equipments.

  • Experience with lab-scale or pilot level manufacturing equipments.

  • Ability to read & interpret electrical, mechanical, and other engineering drawings as well as other technical information

  • Ability to work multi-task with cross-functional teams

What would be better

  • Advanced Degree

  • 3 -5 years of experience in lithium-ion battery cell fabrication/manufacture

  • Experience with equipment operation within Dry-room

  • Experience with battery industrial manufacture process and equipment operation
