Who You Are
As a valued Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through developing next-gen ideas, suggesting new project areas, and establishing technical plans. You will conduct research to develop next-generation electric motor manufacturing technologies. The next generation of motor manufacturing requires advanced joining of traditionally difficult materials, such as copper. A deep understanding of the joining physics of welding these materials (particularly in laser welding) will be critical to help scale our production and assure quality welds in our products. This will include multi-physics modeling of the joining processes, experimental data collection, and validation of the models with physical experiments. You will also write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research. Apply today!
What You Do
Research, develop, and adapt advanced multi-physics welding models to guide parameter selection and process development for motor manufacturing and additive manufacturing processes
Develop and implement technical plans, including concept generation, development, and evaluation
Manage project timing, budget, and deliverables to implement on time and support production
Lead technical discussions and reviews as THE resident expert
Maintain innovative knowledge in related areas of focus
Communicate ideas, plans, and results efficiently via presentations and written reports
Work optimally with peers, management, operations groups, and outside organizations
What You Need
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics Modeling, or related field with demonstrated research capability
Hands on laser welding experience
Solid understanding and hands-on experience with multi-physics modeling and joint characterization data
Knowledge of metallurgical joining techniques and characterization
Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills for both internal and external GM customers

Experience with laser welding of copper conductors
