Researcher - Occupant and Pedestrian Safety

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

Who You Are

As a member of the Vehicle Systems Research Lab, you will be working with the Cabin Experience & Safety group. You will be applying your expertise in sensing, control, electronics and experience with occupant and pedestrian protection in vehicles as appropriate for developing innovative approaches to occupant and pedestrian safety in our vehicles. As a researcher in this group, you will also exercise your project management skills to take the lead in development of new improved safety solutions. Ultimately, you will implement your high value approaches into production and have the opportunity to publish your research findings in peer-reviewed journals in an effort to enhance the reputation of General Motors with next generation technology. This will also include networking with vendors, research institutes and other advanced technology laboratories to build a leverage-able partnership network.

What You Do

  • Develop integrated occupant and pedestrian protection systems

  • Develop tools to aid in the development or deployment of occupant and pedestrian safety systems

  • Collaborate with internal customers, vendors, and external research organizations to refine understanding of requirements and identify innovation opportunities

  • Apply formal project management training to develop and implement project plans to coordinate a team effort developing high value designs and prototypes

  • Contribute to GM R&D through internal and external publication

  • Facilitate technology transfer via active participation in inter-organizational teams


Additional Description

What You Need

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering or related technical area of focus

  • Proven track record in developing project goals and plans

  • Ability to work as a member of a team to achieve goals, coupled with the initiative vital to independently execute innovative research projects

  • Strong leadership and sociability skills

  • Expertise in sensing,  electronics, and control of electromechanical systems

  • Experience with automotive safety requirements

  • Experience with data analysis and modeling techniques such as those from statistics, AI/ML, etc.

What Would Be Even Better

  • PhD in Aerospace, Automotive, or Mechanical Engineering

  • Experience with automotive crash energy management

  • Deep understanding of AI/ML techniques.

  • Demonstrated performance in a position requiring next-gen solutions and engineering technical excellence
