Safety Integration Performance Engineer (Front Impact)


Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite monthly

Work with Safety Integration team members to develop and validate a vehicle platform to global safety requirements.  This engineer will be responsible for meeting frontal passenger occupant safety performance requirements; assessing and balancing performance requirements in partnership with CAE, compliance, structures and restraints teams; procuring parts and authoring test requests; execution of component, sled and barrier testing, analyzing and reporting results; championing and resolving analysis and test issues; correlating and confirming structure and occupant tests with CAE models.

Minimum Requirements – Experience and Expertise In:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomechanics or Engineering Mechanics
  • 3 years post-graduate industry experience
  • Proven understanding the overall safety integration validation of a program related to CAE analysis, component, sled and full-scale barrier testing
  • Project management – proven ability to provide technical direction and feedback to engineering support personnel
  • Vehicle occupant injury assessment & comprehension of motor vehicle FMVSS and consumer metrics
  • Restraint system design and tuning parameters (belts, air bags, steering wheel and column, seats)
  • Assessing and interpreting structural and occupant non-linear crash CAE model analysis using Metapost, Hypergraph, Primer or similar data analysis tools
  • Integration of findings from subsystem/component testing to optimize performance of CAE and physical testing
  • Design of Experiments and DFSS techniques
  • Lab testing including parts procurement, test design, test requests and reports
  • Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to travel up to 10% max

Preferred Requirements:

  • DFSS Black Belt
  • Engineering Masters Degree in Mechanical, Biomechanics or Engineering Mechanics
  • Five or more years of post-graduate automotive industry experience

**Selected candidate has the potential to be hired as a level 6 or level 7 depending on prior skills and experience.**
