Senior Engineer – Enterprise Encryption Platform


This is a Hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work offsite but will also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility. Relocation may be provided.

Information security and data protection is a key element of GM’s information technology strategy.  Within the Enterprise Technology Services organization, the Big Data Infrastructure Engineering team is responsible for managing an ecosystem built on state of the art technologies and provides an opportunity to work with a group of highly motivated and talented individuals.  As a member of that team you will play a significant role in helping GM implement a progressive data encryption shared service supporting global applications including GM’s petabyte scale data infrastructure.  GM is seeking dynamic individuals who will leverage their industry knowledge and experience to scale up and manage this service.

The Senior Platform Engineer for the Data Security will be responsible for overall administration and policy management of the enterprise data encryption platform.  These responsibilities involve systems administration, performance and capacity engineering, administration of platform configuration, on-boarding of applications with encryption requirements as well as architecture and subject matter consultation across GM’s application landscape. Day-to-day activities include:

  • Management & maintenance of encryption platform lifecycle, health, configuration and access
  • Onboarding of applications to the encryption platform, API integration & troubleshooting
  • Development of platform reliability engineering metrics and dashboards
  • Development of encryption API use cases, scenarios, and requirements; conducting PoCs
  • Guidance for adoption and deployment of field level encryption technology throughout the enterprise
  • Providing architecture leadership for application integration with the encryption platform
  • Contributing to enterprise wide encryption policies, standards, and requirements
  • Monitoring and detection of operational and security incidents; leading response and resolution

Additionally, the data encryption platform engineer will be responsible for planning, development and implementation of a technology roadmap required to advance GM’s data security capabilities.

Additional Description


  • Significant OS & middleware (web servers and services) engineering, configuration, and software installation experience
  • Experience with LDAP and Active Directory, federated authentication and single sign-on including related technologies such as Kerberos & SAML
  • Knowledge of various encryption technologies & algorithms for encryption at rest and in transit
  • Knowledge of key & certificate management and protection
  • Strong knowledge of Linux file system hierarchy, package management and command line interface
  • Knowledge of shell scripting and Java programing language
  • Understanding of data classification, entitlement and access management concepts
  • Experience with key & certificate management, protection and certificate-based authentication
  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
  • Strong listening and communications skills, with ability to clearly and concisely explain complex problems and technologies
  • Highly collaborative work style and ability to work with a cross-functional team
  • Understanding of cloud security concepts and CASB products & technologies is a plus
  • Familiarity with containerization involving Docker and Kubernetes will be advantageous


Ten or more years of experience in Information Technology with a minimum of five to seven years of experience relevant to the position. Employment experience in a Fortune 100 company will be beneficial.


  • Bachelor's degree in an information technology or security technical discipline is required. 
  • Master’s level degree in a technical discipline is viewed favorably.
  • An information security professional certification such as CISSP is preferred
