Senior Researcher – Electrical and Software Architecture


Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.

Who You Are

This role contributes to the broader corporate objective of moving to the next generation of GM's electrical architecture known as Vehicle Intelligence Platform (VIP). VIP provides plenty of bandwidth, robust cybersecurity and lightning fast processing power and enables GM’s publicly announced Ultify software platform . Ultify builds on the next generation of VIP and will usher in a new area of software-defined vehicle experiences and services.

What You Do

You will work on and lead research projects in Electrical and Software Architecture and will have the opportunity to propose exciting research projects of value to GM. You'll collaborate closely with engineering teams to insert the results of your near to mid-term research projects into our vehicles. Longer-term research projects will target exploring, prototyping, and applying new and disruptive technologies that earn a place on our roadmaps and result in protected IP for GM. This will require frequent interactions with different project teams, with internal experts from GM R&D and Engineering, with automotive components suppliers, universities, and start-up companies.

Electrical Architecture and communication system related research topics include:

  • Research contributions to our future Software Defined Vehicle architecture and to our current electrical architecture (Vehicle Intelligence Platform)

  • In-vehicle architecture and network topology proposals, evaluations, comparisons, and optimizations

  • In-vehicle communication systems and protocols, IOT protocols, and cloud protocols

  • (e.g. automotive Ethernet, SOME/IP, DDS, MQTT, diagnostic protocols, pub/sub, service discovery, quality of service guarantees, CAN, CAN-FD, CAN-XL)

  • Mechanisms and protocols for on demand back-office access to software accessible physical properties of the vehicle

  • Computing platforms including deeply embedded real time systems, high performance compute and accelerators, SoCs

  • Protocols and middleware for Vehicle to Cloud and Vehicle to Edge applications

Software Architecture related research topics include:

  • Automotive SW architectures and middleware

  • (e.g. Classic & Adaptive AUTOSAR, Service Oriented Architectures, Microservices, Containers, Hypervisors)

  • SW architectures for mixed criticality systems and fault tolerance / dependability (e.g. graceful degradation, safe operation of safety critical services, Quality of Service guarantees, ISO 26262, certifiability)

  • SW architectures enabling independent development and validation of interacting components

  • Elastic and scalable architectures: SW architecture that expands with respect to increasing and decreasing demands on computational resource, accommodate new services, and update existing ones at design time and run time (live updates)

  • Definition and evaluation of abstraction layers (e.g. mechatronic abstraction layer)

What You Need

First and foremost, you need a high level of energy and a relentless desire to drive the result of your research into our products!

Other than that:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field of interest

  • 1 to 5 years relevant industrial or academic experience in electrical architectures and software architecture

  • Hands-on implementation experience required to be effective in PoC implementation settings and electrical architecture bench settings

  • Excellent teamwork skills and project management experience

What Would Be Even Better

  • 5+ years of research experience (postdoc and/or industrial)

  • Advanced Degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related field
