Senior Researcher – Finite Element Modeling of Battery Cells

Onsite: This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.

Who You Are

As a valued member of the energy storage material team, you will innovate through groundbreaking ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish technical plans for advanced batteries targeting EV application. Using commercial finite element platforms (e.g. ABAQUS, LS-DYNA), develop 3D models of battery cells for different cell chemistries and formats to predict cell behavior under various thermal and mechanical conditions. Conduct finite element optimization over cell geometry including case, materials, and operating targets to predict optimal cell designs. Working with experimentalists for model validation, simulate bench scale tests for different load cases, and couple with battery vehicle engineers for evaluation of in-service performance. Interested? Apply today!

What You Do

  • Apply commercial FE software including pre- and post-processors, and develop custom codes (e.g. Python, MATLAB) to support cell modeling.

  • Identify model data needs and acquire from existing databases, via experimentation, or other models.

  • Prior experimental experience with battery cells required to facilitate collaborations with experimentalists in R&D, academia, engineering, and US DOE Labs.

  • Communicate results internally and externally through timely, high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention

  • Collaborate with engineering groups in model development, simulations and model-based analyses

  • Participate in technical discussions and reviews as an expert in battery cell mechanistic behavior

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments affecting areas of responsibility

  • Display sense of entrepreneurship while pushing results toward product implementation

Additional Description

What You Need

  • Ph.D. in engineering, physics, or related subject area with emphasis on finite element and materials modeling

  • Expertise with modeling electrochemistry, heat transfer, thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanical deformation and failure modes

  • Hands-on experience with experimental methods and demonstrated record of successful interactions with experimentalists

  • Experience with modeling under multiple software platforms and with high-performance computing

  • Understanding of material properties and material behavior over relevant temperature ranges

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent sociability while collaborating with internal and external customers, including executive management

  • Results oriented, flexible, and ability to work within timelines
