Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

About the Launch and Deploy team at General Motors:
The Launch and Deploy Team is a DevOps team that is responsible for the execution of all application releases in the manufacturing environment, including installation of new instances and IT required configuration. This includes working with the business to provide all configuration needed to support new vehicle and GPS launches.

The Launch and Deploy Team is a DevOps team that is responsible for the execution of all application releases in the manufacturing environment, including installation of new instances and IT required configuration.   This includes working with the business to provide all configuration needed to support new vehicle and GPS launches. 

The Launch/Deploy Software Deployment Team Lead will be a functional and direct leader to several Software Deployment Engineers that work on multiple different applications.  They will be responsible for ensuring their team is providing the work and support needed to meet the Launch and Deploy organizational goals.

The Software Deployment Team Lead is and entry level people leadership role.  The Lead is responsible for ensuring appropriate people management activities are completed for all direct reports.  In addition, they will ensure their team of Deployment Engineers have the tools, training, and processes needed to complete deployment activities including gathering high-level requirements from manufacturing plant(s), updating existing software installations and/or configuring applications to the specific needs for the plant, and troubleshooting issues that may arise relating to either the new code or plant configuration.  This role will also work closely with the development, operations, and other support teams to ensure 100% uptime, reliability, and security.

Deployment Engineers will be required to:

  • Manage multiple direct reports and be responsible for multiple people management requirements including performance management, career development and planning, talent development of team, work planning, mentorship, and other managerial requirements as defined by leadership and HR.
  • Interface with GM HR organization on broad range of topics including recruiting, hiring, onboarding, workplace of choice survey results, Diversity Equity & Inclusion initiatives, and professional development training opportunities
  • Work closely with IT infrastructure delivery teams to ensure team can install and configure virtual servers in plant data centers with minimum or no supervision
  • Perform IT Project Management for deploy projects and assist support/assist launch leads perform IT Project Management role to ensure launch and deployment activities are tracking for on-time delivery and escalating any risks as necessary with minimum or no supervision
  • Identify repeatable deployment actions for automation via scripting or CI/CD pipelines
  • Take initiative to improve processes and effectively prioritize work
  • Follow standardized processes to ensure accurate status reporting of high-level launches and projects
  • Ensure technical application training plans are created and implemented
  • Support complex analysis, troubleshooting, advance business configurations, and validation requirements, are completed and ensure solutions meet company standards
  • Investigates IT system integration problems and provides technical resolution
  • Have knowledge of software monitoring tools for uptime and performance
  • Have knowledge of configuring programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
  • Maintain technical documentation to reflect accurate and current production installations
  • Hold themselves and others accountable for demonstrating GMs values and cultural behaviors.

  • Learn new technical concepts and practices quickly and apply them across multiple types of applications and software.

Additional Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience
  • This role may require occasional travel
  • +5 years of IT experience
  • Experience in effectively managing relationships and influencing others
  • Proven experience working on complex IT projects
  • Experience in leading technology teams/projects with strategic and tactical responsibilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate and translate feedback, needs and solutions
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality
  • Creative problem-solving skills for solving complex issues
  • Strong teamwork focus with the ability to foster collaboration within and across teams
  • Familiarity with the plant manufacturing environment is preferred
  • This role may require some weekend/off shift/holiday work
  • Strong background in software/application development lifecycle, including budget, planning, requirements management, and test procedures.
  • Quickly learn the technical configuration and testing requirements for the applications you will be managing
  • Experience from at least one area:
  • Familiar with Coding: C#/VC++/MFC /Java / Python /ASP.NET/VB.NET/  
  • Databases: Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, PostgreSQL or other databases
  • Web Application Servers: WebSphere, WebLogic, TomCat, IIS
  • Infrastructure: Server Provisioning, Virtual Machines, Networking,
  • OS: Linux, UNIX, Windows Server, Cloud technology, Containerization
  • Tools: Team Foundation Server (Azure Dev Ops), IT Service Manager, PowerBI, Jenkins, Chef, GitHub, Fortify, SonarLint/SonarQube, Artifactory
  • IT Enterprise Security concepts and/or implementation

  Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • Can motivate and effectively lead people through change
  • Familiarity with the plant manufacturing environment is preferred
  • Knowledge of manufacturing tools and technologies (e.g., SCADA, Proficy, Cimplicity, etc.)
  • Special consideration for experience in Automated Storage & Retrieval Systems (AS/RS)
  • Expert knowledge of manufacturing processes and systems
  • Experience using CIMPLICITY software
  • Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLC) platform is a benefit
  • Experience in application containerization
  • Experience in IT Enterprise Security concepts and implementation
