Our diverse team of Manufacturing Engineers plays a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies. From raw sheet metal to final assembly, this team is reinventing the tools and processes that will enable GM to deliver on our promise to create an all-electric future. As part of the reimagination, a newly formed Materials Organization center will be established within Vehicle Systems which will have full planning to execution ownership of Material Strategies.

This has never been a more exciting opportunity for a Senior Manager to lead the North American Materials Organization team as we launch our future vehicles.  The individual will lead a dynamic group of subject matter experts to safely drive overall manufacturing 4 wall Material Strategies with minimal human intervention for movement of materials, while maintaining minimum inventory, maximum density and shortest distance to operators.

The Senior Manager will have direct responsibilities for Material Organizations business planning which includes:  Program Planning, Estimating & Scheduling, Business Systems Development, Innovation and Lean Material strategies. This individual will determine overall manufacturing plants 4 wall Material Strategies related to material flow, routings, storage space requirements, mobile equipment, layout development, and ensures overall site vision and financial requirements are captured. Also, this person will lead development of future sites by investigating and advancing new technologies related to material strategies that drive efficiencies related to Safety, MCPU, labor targets, and other Manufacturing KPIs. Staffing and establishing the right people in right places will be critical to the team’s success.

The Senior Manager will also collaborate and influence Product Integration team, Execution teams from ME GA plus appropriate stakeholders (finance, plant-based teams etc). Will embrace challenges and opportunities to exceed goals while applying the most efficient and lean design principles for the entire GM Enterprise.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leverage on Advanced Technologies related to Innovation, math-based tools, virtual simulation tools to safely drive overall manufacturing 4 wall Material Strategies. End result being minimal human intervention for movement of materials, while maintaining minimum inventory, maximum density and shortest distance to operators

  • Determine program financial requirements for all GVDP (PFI – CSO) and non-GVDP studies working closely with Strategies and Planning and Manufacturing Program Management

  • Lead a group of seasoned Subject Matter Experts (Technical Leads) on development and execution of the global BOP/BOE/BOO whilst identifying opportunities in own area of material strategies. As well as exchange of ideas through the various global expert team reviews

  • Lead material investment for the future program planning (MPS), and establish/track material planning metrics to be applied Globally. Estimate Indirect headcount while in planning phase and take actions or use improvements to exceed existing goals

  • Deployment of appropriate Material Flow Simulation tool by identifying ideas or practices found in similar companies within the industry that can be applied at GM. System should remove the need to rely on manual calculations with capability to generate routes, provide insights into congestion analysis and resource optimization

  • Drive compression strategies early on in steady/future state applications

  • Full ownership of GMOS (Global Materials Optimization System) tools. Additionally, update GMOS tool to capture early planning metrics by fostering a productive collaboration with stakeholders on defined and undefined goals

  • Develop and execute strategy for accurate location detection to track material containers (including stillages) between supplier and GM – flexible, real-time, dependable, low maintenance and upkeep costs. Leverages competitive data

  • Collaborate and to influence “Container Team” for synergies to resolve container timing/readiness issues impacting new launch and influence design to support automated deliveries. In parallel, coordinate with Global Mobile Equipment for equipment standards, replacements, repurpose to optimize program investment.

  • Actively engage and collaborate with other ME Centers, Mfg Chief Engineers, and with the Plants for the overall result achievement and for reduction of complexity

  • Work with all regions (GM China, GM International, GM SA) on generating ideas and deployment

  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally

  • Must have solid knowledge of the GM Global Vehicle Development Process and Global Launch Process

Key Leadership Competencies:

  • Strategic and Commercial Orientation – The candidate should demonstrate a high level of technical aptitude and innovation mindset. Experience in understanding industry trends and core technologies involved in manufacturing material handling systems and must be capable of making decisions and setting directions to enable successful launches.  The senior leader needs to have a strong fiscal mindset toward Company financial results.

  • Team Leadership - The candidate should demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills and managerial courage required to lead a large group of managers and engineers to deliver business results all while demonstrating and living by GM behaviors.

  • Results Orientation – The candidate must have extensive knowledge of materials systems (within manufacturing) in the areas of planning, processing and operations with in-depth knowledge of Manufacturing Engineering roles and responsibilities as well as automation organization and processes to deliver exceptional results on a consistent basis. 

  • People Development – The candidate must have prior engineering supervisory experience with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in Manufacturing (Manufacturing Engineering or Operations).  Some key experiences are in materials handling program planning, program execution, design (material flow) and project management. These experiences will help the candidate in developing the team long-term capabilities for success.

  • Collaborating and Influencing – The candidate must have a high level of communication skills, both written and oral along with high level of organization and planning skills. The candidate must be able to communicate comfortably to Senior Leaders and must be able to gain support globally and cross-functionally through influence and reasoning versus command and control.

  • Change Leadership – The candidate must be comfortable with constant change and change management to be able to drive transformation and help align and move the organization forward towards new and challenging directions.

  • Customer Focus – The candidate must be able to work with key stakeholders (GA team. Plant based team, Program team) to ensure alignment and delivery of solutions that will enable successful launches.  The candidate must be willing to help the execution team and plants during steady state and help orchestrate solutions to concerns raised on a timely and efficient manner. 

  • Market Knowledge – The candidate needs to be able to look beyond their own area and understand the competition and work to move the business forward be it with suppliers, within the centers, or operations all with an end goal of creating a detailed forward-looking plan. 


Additional Description

Minimum Requirements:

  • 7+ years of Global Supply Chain and/or Manufacturing materials handling experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Required

  • Experience in Lean Material Strategies and/or Shop Floor Material Handling, Warehouse Compression

  • Experience in New Program Launch

  • Exposure to Automotive Assembly (or similar) lineside part presentation, Containerization best practices

  • Exposure to indirect labor study tools

  • Exposure to material innovative technology or automation tools

  • Tenacity and desire to be a ‘change agent’

  • Ability to accelerate and deliver stretch targets

  • Experienced in leading large team, developing people
