Sustainability and Recycling Lead


Hybrid:  This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility approximately 1-3 days per week.

GM is seeking a Sustainability and Recycling Lead to join Chemistry Platform and Electrode Integration team to be responsible for activities that is related to product sustainability and recycling. This candidate will work closely with cross functional team of cell design engineering, scientist, external vendors, and technology partners to evaluate new processing technology, equipment/machine, and battery raw materials to ensure product sustainability. This includes new material synthesis technology, new electrode processing, and raw material resources. In addition to this role, the candidate will also lead the recycling activities for the electrode process by engaging with recycling suppliers and evaluating their processes and its impact on our final product feasibility.   

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Support productivity and quality.

  • Develop and implement ways to improve safety, increase productivity, improve product quality, reduce operating costs, and minimize waste.

  • Develop and report of all necessary maintenance repair items, required process improvements, quality control concerns, and production supply levels.

  • Support team to set-up local sourcing supply chain and partnerships with scrap suppliers.

  • Drafts and implements sustainable organizational policies that address environmental concerns.

  • Evaluates efficacy of sustainability programs

  • Recommends and implements improvements as necessary.

  • Conducts research to identify environmental and sustainability concerns, interests, and issues

  • Build relationships with decision makers in battery & battery recycling industry

  • Work on new leads and keep on top of developments in the industry

  • Collect battery scrap for recycling purposes

  • Manage overall contract execution starting from purchase to delivery

  • Ensure management of waste quality and market related risks

  • Co-ordinate with logistics teams and service providers

Additional Description

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Material Science, Chemistry, Environmental Chemical Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree​

  • 5+ years of experience with Battery material recycling and sustainability work

  • Technical knowledge and experience related to Lithium-Ion Battery technology and cell components materials.

  • Buying/trading products in waste recycling value chain (Lithium-Ion Batteries, paste and black mass, downstream battery materials)

  • Willingness to work in a high intensity start-up environment

  • Open to travel

Desired Skills:

  • Master’s Degree+ in Material Science, Chemistry, Environmental Chemical Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree

  • Prefer understanding of Li-Ion Battery Industry value chain
