System Architect – Universal Basic Software

Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

  • This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week

The Role

General Motors and the Global Electrification, Controls, Software & Electronics organization is looking for a System Architect to lead the design, architecture, execution, and deployment of the enterprise wide Universal Basic Software effort in coordination with other critical emerging technology and innovation initiatives such as software defined vehicle, and the new generation of vehicle intelligence platforms. SDV & VIP are new vehicle technologies that will underpin our future innovations across a wide range of technological advancements, including EVs and expanded automated driving. The VIP Execution organization is looking for a system architect to lead the Universal Basic Software project in both a strategic and tactical manor to ensure strategic alignment with the rest of our architecture & core enablers.

The System Architect plays a critical role in the SAFe framework as they are responsible for describing the solution intent, analyzing technical trade-offs, determining the primary components, guiding critical enablers, and working with product management, customers, and suppliers to help ensure fitness for purpose. They must align key stakeholders across GECSE, coordinate architecture of the various initiatives, determine the optimal architecture to meet technical and business objectives, and deliver tactical plans to the execution team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working closely with both internal departments and external suppliers to evolve the universal basic software architecture, as well as develop basic software infrastructure solutions used in electronic control modules (e.g. Classic AUTOSAR, OS, RTE, SUMS, Cybersecurity, GM BSW modules and other application software components.)

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership:

    • Lead the design, architecture, execution, and deployment of the enterprise wide Universal Basic Software project in alignment with other critical emerging technology and innovation initiatives such as software defined vehicle (SDV) and the new generation of vehicle intelligence platforms (VIP+).

    • Align key stakeholders across GECSE, coordinate architecture of the various initiatives, determine the optimal architecture to meet technical and business objectives, and deliver tactical plans to the execution team.

    • Review existing software to determine restructuring opportunities to improve quality, maintainability, reusability, or other software improvements.

  • Stay up to date on trends in layered software engineering, quality, architecture, and development processes.

  • Actively engage in external technical communities to stay abreast with latest technology trends and bring outside perspective to continuously improve our architecture, products, and processes.

  • Collaborate with VMEC, SDV, VIP Execution, Electronics, Mechatronics, and other GECSE teams to ensure key stakeholder alignment, innovation, quality, efficiency, and productivity, as well as support technology roadmaps.

  • Drive software architecture discipline and principles into the organization

  • Deepen the knowledge of universal basic software, software quality, and software architecture within GECSE.

  • Build relationships and manage key interfaces with other organizations and teams such as systems/safety/ advanced controls/hardware engineering, to define and capture requirements and ensure successful implementation of features

  • Mentor and develop others, providing technical training and establish effective mechanisms of knowledge-sharing

  • Drive a culture of GM Behaviors, safety, and regulatory compliance


Additional Description

Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science

  • 5+ years of engineering experience with hands on working experience related to software development & architecture

  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area

  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork included demonstrating ability for working through others and influencing without direct authority

  • High level of oral and written communication skills

  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals required

Desired Skills

  • 10+ years of Software/Software Architecture Engineering experience

  • MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science

  • Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) certification

  • Experience with the GM embedded software architecture and the development tool chain

  • Experience with bootloader, embedded OS, or memory management in automotive applications

  • Knowledge with AUTOSAR standards and methodology

  • Experience with safety critical design, testing and validation, e.g. ISO26262

  • Experience with AUTOSAR concepts (BSW (Communication Services, Memory Services, System Services and Complex Device Drivers), architecture, specifications, and configuration tools. (RTE configuration, etc.)

  • Experienced with GM BSW, Cybersecurity, and VIP Architecture

  • Experience with configuration management software (GIT, etc)

  • Knowledge of vehicle embedded controls electrical architecture and integration (Propulsion, Chassis, Brakes, Steering, Safety Smart Actuation modules and ECUs, etc.)

  • Solid understanding of in-vehicle networks such as CAN and LIN communications
