Technical Specialist - Battery Thermal Propagation Mitigation

This position is for a Technical Specialist for the Battery Thermal Propagation Mitigation. This position will be responsible for setting the Thermal propagation mitigation strategy and architecture to meet System Safety requirements for GM’s various BEV programs. The Technical Specialist is the subject matter expert that is responsible for establishing, communicating, and assuring compliance to the global Bill of Design/Bill of Materials/Bill of Process (BOD/BOM/BOP) for the Battery Thermal Propagation Mitigation sub-systems and components.

This role is responsible for specifying and balancing requirements, definition, execution and evaluation of designs and performance targets, analysis, development, test procedures, testing and validation of major engineering projects where a substantial amount of creativity and initiative are involved as well as a high level of independent judgment.  The broad scope of responsibilities includes components and systems and technical mentoring of other engineers.  This position will need to exercise technical direction over other engineers or engineering support personnel and may have work direction responsibilities over a group with specific engineering objectives.  Capable of managing very broad or numerous projects with a high degree of difficulty.  Actively engages in team issue resolution and supplier leveraging.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical support to design responsible and development/validation engineers.

  • Benchmarking of applicable technology and keeper of technical memory.

  • Develop global BOD and BOM documents and integrate with BOP.

  • Effective, usable, and easily searchable global BOD/BOM documents on the Battery Pack Engineering technical website(s) and under change control.

  • BOD/BOM integrated with other Program Management Team (PMT’s) systems and tracked (100% congruence).

  • Drives BOM/BOD development items.

  • Serves as the Creativity Team lead subject matter expert.

  • BOM/BOD development list owner, tracking according to agreed schedule.

  • Systematic worldwide technology assessment, usage and source selection strategy.

  • Provides technical support/best practices to manufacturing engineering and production facilities.

  • Support global supplier technical evaluation and Localization process.

  • Global supplier visits / develop and maintain list of technically approved global suppliers (TASL).

  • Lead team through new requirements. Mentors team members on very ambiguous concepts; conveys ideas for DFSS/Analysis/technical solutions to meet deliverables.

  • Work with DREs on CRV/PPDRs for all N1/N2 components and concepts. Provide guidance on how to bring engineering evidence to PPDR. Hold self and PMT members accountable for measurable high-quality, timely and cost-effective results, without compromising the integrity, safety and quality of work.

  • Design review process minutes and action plans, including BOD/BOM deviation summary.

  • Participate as a team member in PMTs on new designs/major redesigns as technical expert to ensure success and monitor global BOD/BOM/BOP compatibility.

  • Serves as a liaison with Advanced Engineering for technical developments.

  • Coordinates/participates in activities on appropriate advanced and developmental activities.

  • Participate in quarterly report outs and provide appropriate technical expertise.

  • Participates as a leader or co-leader in the COE.

  • Participates in the warranty reduction/quality improvement process in order to assure lessons learned are captured and included in global BOD/BOM.

  • HW Subject Matter Expert to support software, calibration, and integration issues.

  • Teach Battery Design class for related PMT.

  • Travel as required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

  • At least 5 years of experience in BEV Battery Thermal systems and/or Thermal Propagation Mitigation systems.

  • Experience working with suppliers.

  • Must be willing and able to present information to colleagues, leadership, and suppliers in a clear and concise manner.

  • Must be willing and able to travel as needed globally to support the business as needed (estimated 0-20%).

Desired Skills:

  • Master of Science in Mechanical or other Engineering disciplines.

  • At least 8 years of experience in BEV Battery Thermal systems and/or Thermal Propagation Mitigation systems.

  • Experience working with BEV Battery Thermal Propagation Mitigation systems vehicle integration issues.

  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and elicit work output.

  • High level of analytical problem-solving skills where problems may be unusual and difficult to resolve.
