Technical Specialist – Controller Electronics


The Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC) organization is seeking an Engine & Transmission Technical Specialist, who is responsible for developing the strategic vision for the engine and transmission embedded controls as well as supporting development and maintenance of the technical requirements that support this vision! Additionally, the Technical Specialist participates in the VMEC Electronics Portfolio Strategy team (VEPS) which develops the overarching technical strategy roadmap for VMEC Electronics.

This position may require occasional on-site work with ability to work from home portion of the time if desired by the employee

Job Responsibilities

  • Required to support coordination of propulsion related studies
  • Work with VMEC Electronics GSSLT (Global Subsystem Leadership Technical) and engine and transmission hardware architects to develop technology roadmap
  • Establish overall reuse and sourcing strategy for ICE propulsion specific control modules with the GSSLT and Purchasing Commodity Manager
  • Provide proposals for new ATW technology ideas/projects and provide technical support to ATW technology projects
  • Initiate epics in the GECSE (Global Electrification, Controls, SW & Electronics) Lean Portfolio Management system and provide required information to move them to decision
  • Participate as core member of sourcing activities for new controllers for commodity including sourcing specification readiness meetings, supplier workshops, technical reviews and supplier technical rating
  • Participate in quality assessment reviews to ensure variation/failure modes are comprehended
  • Foster communication and learnings between regions
  • Mentor and provide consultation as necessary to VMEC engineers and managers

Required Skills and Experience:

  • BS in Engineering, Math or Physics
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in automotive embedded controls development including DRE experience
  • Knowledge and experience in ICE propulsion control systems
  • High level of competence in writing and comprehending hardware and software requirements
  • Excellent knowledge of vehicle serial data communications (CAN, GMLAN, LIN, ) and electrical architectures (Global A, and VIP)
  • Detailed knowledge of mechatronics, microcontroller architectures and memory technologies
  • Detailed understanding of hardware and software design and failure modes in electronic modules

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Master's degree in one of the following areas: Engineering, Math or Physics
  • Knowledge of GM product design and development cycles
