VS General Assembly Execution Zone Engineer


The Vehicle Systems General Assembly Execution Zone Engineer is a multifaceted role that requires interaction with many GM organizations to achieve project objectives.  There are many opportunities as a Zone Engineer to contribute towards success of the company.  The Zone Engineer position is a great way to learn more about manufacturing (technical and process), improve written and verbal communication skills, learn how to manage a project with many variables, build strong working relationships, and get hands-on experience to create a manufacturing system that can build new vehicles for GM!

Job Responsibilities:

  • Serve as technical project manager and lead cross functional team to accomplish project deliverables
  • Create the assembly process and layout to incorporate current and future state production requirements
  • Maintain open issues list, risks to project, and document deviations from standard processes
  • Responsible to be single point contact for integration suppliers to communicate scope of work, tooling requirements, build process, and engineering changes.
  • Work collaboratively with project management teams at integration suppliers to complete project deliverables.
  • Integrate into the assembly plant’s existing standardized work for throughput improvement, weekend work, start-up processes, and management of change.
  • Document and share lessons learned with other Vehicle Systems teams to ensure success for the organization.
  • The travel requirements for the Zone ME are dependent on the project location and phase and can vary between 25% to 75% within North America.  Zone ME responsibilities will involve some weekend work and potential off shift to support installation and validation build efforts.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to travel to GM manufacturing facilities within North America
  • Demonstrate high levels of analytical ability to solve problems and resolve issues
  • Self-motivated to manage multiple complex assignments with autonomy with a focus on results
  • Ability to effectively communicate project requirements and status to various audiences (e.g. senior management, peers, suppliers, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with team members and customers
  • College degree in engineering or equivalent relevant experience
  • 2+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Showing initiative by reaching beyond assigned work to improve output and/or help and teach others
  • Experience with Industrial Engineering and Assembly Processing System (APS) which holds operator standardized work
  • Experience with Program and/or Project Management
  • Experience with General Assembly Production or Automotive Maintenance
  • Experience with Ergonomic requirements
  • Experience with Autodesk Design Review, AutoCAD, TeamCenter, VisMockup, Vehicle Assembly Structure (VAS), and/or Virtual Vehicle Integration (VVI)
  • Knowledge and ability to implement Global Manufacturing System (GMS) principles
  • Knowledge of Manufacturing Processes and Equipment, Global Launch Process, and Global Vehicle Development Process
  • Experience with Mechanical Design Standards & Manufacturing Engineering General Assembly forms, Risk Assessments (Safety) or Red Tag / Lockout Procedures, Safety FMEA and Process FMEA
