The Battery Assembly Team is looking for talented and self-driven individuals to fill the NEW role of welding Technical Specialist (TS). Our team is responsible for the execution of programs at the heart of GMs Zero-Zero-Zero initiatives. $27 billion of investments in EV and AV products and 30 EVs by 2025, including GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac all-new CELESTIQ. The primary responsibility of the TS is to 'get the product right' and do so by delivering product designs that enable a flawless launch. TS will provide manufacturability direction for welding and laser trim operations to the product engineering team during early concept development. In addition, TS will act as the subject matter expert for welding and laser trim for the products as they move into design release and production. As the SME, the TS will work closely with the manufacturing responsible engineering team (MRE) to help guide the product development team (PDT) to ensure manufacturability of components. There will be great opportunities to carry latest technology trends to current programs and latest lessons learned from launches back to future battery design. Work is performed in a team environment where you will have daily interactions with Product Engineering (PE), Programs System Engineers (PSEs) and Manufacturing Engineers (MEs). This is a hybrid role with opportunities to work from home, at the Warren Tech Center in the state of the art Battery Lab and Pre-Production Operations, and in plants like Factory Zero where our team is currently launching the Hummer EV. Key Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for leading/supporting activities that may include:

  • Recognized expert for technology implementation across all products, providing technical direction to others:
    • develop global Bill of Process/Bill of Equipment documents
    • manufacturing process development and definition
    • sequence of operations
    • human factors consideration
    • efficient material flow
    • design, construction, integration, plant installation, successful launch and continuous improvement of systems, equipment, and tools required in plants to produce high-quality parts
  • Subject matter expert in manufacturing system design for battery welding and laser cutting
  • Serve as a liaison with advanced engineering for technical developments, including ATW projects and manufacturing validation 
  • Participate in Process Failure Alert reviews, PRTS, GRAT, warranty reduction and quality improvement processes to assure lessons learned are captured and included in global BOP/BOE

Additional Description

Skills/Knowledge/Requirements:

Responsible for supporting activities that include:

  • Proven expert technical knowledge and ability in process engineering disciplines (specifically battery welding and laser cutting processes)
  • Proven ability in project management skills
  • Proven ability to coach, guide and teach other engineers as well as equipment suppliers
  • Significant Manufacturing Engineering experience – (10) years of experience in manufacturing engineering on multiple battery designs
  • New product program and launch experience

Proven expert skill level in the following technologies relating to battery or related welded assembly:

  • GD&T and tolerance stacks
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Design for Battery Manufacturability

Travel:

  • Willingness/ability to travel globally to production facilities and OEMs as required


Education:

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing or related Engineering discipline
