Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Milford, MI ) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role:

SDV Vehicle Energy is a systems group that supports the definition, design, and development of EV Smart Charging solutions related to GM’s electric vehicle initiatives. There is no better time to join this domain as we evolve to the next generation of Smart Charging solutions, innovation, and capabilities within Software Defined Vehicles. 

The EV Charging Communication System Specialist in Vehicle Energy is responsible for leading EV charging communication standards integration (DIN, ISO 15118, CHAdeMO, GBT and Chaoji) in GM Electric vehicles  and to develop /design communication strategy and requirements for  physical/data link, communication software interfaces to be used by in-vehicle ECUs with any of the EV Charging Stations within Software & Services department. 

What You’ll do:

  • Create and maintain requirements for EV Charging Communication Layers (from Physical/Data Link up to Application Interfaces) for current and future EV Communication Standards (DIN, ISO 15118, CHAdeMO, GBT and Chaoji).
  • Create and maintain requirements for EV Charging Communication strategy and related diagnostics to enable reliable communication between Vehicle and EV Charging Station (e.g. startup, communication faults and recovery, requests/responses communication patterns/sequencing, timeouts, shutdown, communication stack layers partitioning and interactions, gateway of EV PLC/CAN/WiFi to In-Vehicle Ethernet Communication, etc). 
  • Lead the hardware and internal/external software teams in implementation of EV Charging Communication Interfaces and Requirements along with necessary optimizations.
  • Lead the vehicle architecture and back office teams in the implementation of software service interfaces, documenting interface to enable feature integration solutions and functionality.
  • Work with the validation team to create test plan, test cases at subsystem, component level for adherence to requirements/standards and to confirm/ensure interoperability to EV Charging Infrastructure.
  • Participate in the EV Charging Standards Consortiums like ISO, CHARIn, SAE for collaborating and influencing in the definition of Charging Communication standards that can benefit GM Strategies for EV Charging solutions.
  • Stay abreast of new technology, new standards, tools and competitive products in EV Charging area.
  • Support vehicle launches and troubleshoot issues in EV Charging interfaces and communication supporting integration, ride trips and industry test events.
  • Work closely with Cybersecurity, Vehicle Software Development, Cloud Engineering Teams to integrate Charging Communication Solutions relative to Certificate Management, Interoperability, Calibration to enable Smart Charging solutions end to end.
  • Provide regular key updates to the leadership to ensure synchronization and smooth flow of information.
  • Lead Failure Mode Analysis (FMEA) activities and allocate identified failure modes to development teams.
  • Perform deeply complex trade-off studies to balance performance with complexity, cost and charging reliability initiatives.
  • Travel as required to support fulfillment of objectives.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering 
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Expertise in EV Charging regulatory requirements SAE, ISO, IEC and industry standards applicable to electric vehicle battery charging products.
  • Deep understanding of the ISO 15118-2 (and related ISO15118 standards) vehicle charging protocol.
  • Implementation Experience with development/integration of ISO15118 standard software into In vehicle systems , EVSE and associated configuration/optimization of standard for a production environment.
  • Experience developing functional requirements for Charging Controls / Off board Charging Station Communication integration.
  • Experience and understanding of hardware and software validation testing at various levels for EV Charging (SIL, HIL, Charger and Vehicle Charging System).
  • Vehicle integration development of charging controls, SAE J1772, DIN70121, ISO 15118, interoperability, bench integration, conformance testing.
  • Working experience with Plug and Charge, charging infrastructure, and BMS (Battery Management System)
  • Ability to coordinate and complete tasks per a release schedule 
  • Ability to identify non-compliance to standards, support resolution of PRTS, field issues and needed optimizations.
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unique and complex

  • Deep understanding of the ISO 15118-20 vehicle charging protocol and participation in the Consortium/standards body.
  • Deep knowledge of Systems Engineering principles and a proven track record of successful implementation.
  • Experience executing production programs through launch.
  • Record of innovation in systems, subsystems, or feature design: patents, awards, or publications
  • Expertise in EV Charging regulatory requirements CHAdeMO, GBT and Chaoji industry standards, validation tests/requirements and conformance testing
  • Record of innovation in systems, subsystems, or feature design: patents, awards, or publications
  • Experience with change management tools (i.e. Jira, GIT, etc)
  • Experience leveraging simulation environments and plant modeling for testing or requirements generation is a plus (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, D-Space HIL, SIL, ETAS Inca, etc.)
  • Master Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering
