Hybrid:

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report primarily to the Opdyke Test facility in Pontiac three times per week on average, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role:

In this role as the Process Engineer - Robotics Certifications, in the exiting new Autonomous Robot Center "ARC" you will ensure our robots meet the highest safety standards, without compromising performance or flexibility.  You will work jointly with System Safety Engineers to develop the solution at the Software and Hardware level in addition to defining requirements and communicating the solution vision. You will also analyze technical trade-offs, determine the primary components and subsystems, identify the interfaces and collaborations between them, define Nonfunctional Requirements (NFRs), guide Enablers, and work with Product Management, Program Management, System Safety, and Suppliers to help ensure the  System Safety requirements and strategy are met.​ This individual will be heavily integrated with the Product Teams to elaborate and develop software and hardware solutions, validating technology assumptions, evaluating implementation alternatives, and supporting the strategy.

What You'll Do: (Responsibilities):

  • Define Safety System Architecture : Collaborate with System Safety Engineering to plan high-level product design, explore alternatives, and ensure scalability, maintainability, and testability. Define subsystems, interfaces, and derive lower-level requirements.
  • Support Planning and Implementation: Provide technical guidance, review architecture and wiring diagram designs, assist in refinements, prioritize Safety Critical requirements, and ensure adherence to UL Certification.
  • Collaborate on system validation and verification strategies to ensure safety targets are met (SIL/PL)
  • Work with regulatory bodies to drive product certification and safety audits
  • Support compliance with UL and ANSI/RIA R15.08-1, 2 standards for automated/driverless industrial mobile robots (IMRs)
  • Guide cross-functional teams on safety best practices and development lifecycle integration

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics or related experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in Process Engineering
  • 1 year in Functional or System Safety or Safety Critical embedded controls design/development
  • Familiarity with C/C++, Python, MATLAB, SimuLink
  • Familiar with mobile robot technologies (navigation, LiDAR, safety PLCs, fail-safe actuators, and other programmable safety rated sensors and components).
  • Familiarity with UL3100, NFPA-505, ANSI/RIA R15.08-1, ISO 3691-4, ANSI B56.5, EN ISO 13850, or equivalent
  • Experience with validation done in accordance to ISO 3691-4: Safety stopping test, fitness for purpose test (structural and dynamic), stability calculations.
  • Experience with Low Voltage batteries and LV schematics.
  • Experience with creation and evaluation of wiring diagrams, including, but not limited to: Sensors (LiDARs, encoders, E-Stops, pendants), Logic (logic module, communication module, safety input/output module, motion monitoring module, safety relay module), and Actuators (safety contactors, motor controllers)
  • Proven ability to develop detailed root cause of failures and establish a quick resolution
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time or higher based on business needs within United States.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)

  • Master of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics or related experience.
  • Experience in UL Certification bringing a first-time product through approval process
  • Controls and/or diagnostic related development, test or validation experience
  • Familiarity with ISO 12100:2010, risk assessment, identification, classification, mitigation proposals, definition of safety function, residual risks.
  • Familiarity in defining operating limits of the machine, safety functions and required performance levels (PLr), defining safety function architecture.
  • Familiarity in calculating PL levels based on PFHD/MTTFD values
  • Familiarity with Sistema tool
  • Proven knowledge and experience with safety PLCs and HMIs
  • Experience in High Voltage and Low Voltage Electrical Architectures with experience planning, designing, and implementing System Safety requirements.
  • A proven history of designing and implementing System Safety Standards.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration practices.
  • Experience working with safety diagnostic monitors.
  • Machine learning, simulation methods and data acquisition.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Establish relationships and collaborate with other organizations and teams, such as System Safety, Controls Engineering, and other Program teams.
