As a buyer, you get to interact with a lot of different people throughout the day. It’s pretty exciting. My day includes emails/phone calls; conversing with my supply base; collaborating with GM engineering on sourcing and work order changes. I also work with GM supplier quality and logistics and help share ideas and strategies with my co-workers.
Over the years, my positions at GM have allowed me to better myself in many areas. My communication, prioritizing, multitasking, problem-solving and technical skills have all improved. These are skills which I use every day in every aspect of my life.
I have been pushed out of my comfort zone a few times. In 2015, I was responsible for organizing our supplier symposium for GM Steel Resale. I was nervous to take on the assignment, as I didn’t have much experience interacting with the supply base and was uncomfortable with public speaking. After hosting a few of the sessions, I gained confidence speaking in front of large crowds. I am much more comfortable with public speaking now, which is a skill that I will use for the rest of my career.

By being a part of the General Motors TRACK (Technical Rotation and Career Knowledge) program, I have been exposed to a variety of functions within GM and have grown my network tremendously.
