Privacy Statement Your privacy is important to General Motors (GM) Company.  We want you to know that Personally Identifiable Information (PII) GM collects from you will be treated with care. GM’s Privacy Statement for General Motors Job Applicants lets you know how General Motors (GM), as data controller, handles Personal Information that you share with General Motors throughout the hiring process.

Personal Information Collection and Use
General Motors hiring process consists of multiple steps designed to evaluate your skills and qualifications for a particular position.  When you choose to participate in the General Motors hiring process, you will be asked to provide GM with Personal Information about yourself.  The Personal Information that you provide will be used to match your skills and interest to General Motors job requirements.  Your Personal Information will also be used to contact and identify you throughout the hiring process.  Some examples of Personal Information that may be collected in the hiring process include name, address, employment history and others as required by local law.  Government Issue ID and Date of Birth will be collected if an offer of employment is extended to you and an offer is accepted or prior to or during the interview process if required by local law.

The information that you share with General Motors may be used by GM suppliers, appointed by General Motors as data processor, exclusively for the purposes of administering services in the General Motors hiring process. For example, GM may provide Personal Information about you to a supplier that will administer selection tools such as role-plays and decision challenges, or with a supplier that will perform a background verification. We will not share your Personal Information with other third parties for their independent use without your permission. However, nothing in this Privacy Statement prevents the disclosure of your Personal Information for legal compliance, or in response to government inquiries. Additionally, nothing in this Privacy Statement prevents the use of the legal process by General Motors.

Providing your Personal Information is not mandatory, but it is necessary if you want to participate in the hiring process.


Cookies and Other Tracking Devices
We may use cookies and other tracking devices on our websites.  Using cookies on our sites provides benefits to you, such as allowing you to maintain your login information between visits.  The use of cookies also allows us to measure site activity to provide a better user experience.  Based on your consent, cookies and other tracking devices may be used to tell us the time and length of your visit, the pages you look at on our site, the site you visited just before coming to ours, and the name of your Internet service provider.

Personal Information Security
General Motors recognizes the importance of safeguarding your Personal Information under its control from theft, inappropriate use, or improper distribution and will use reasonable organizational, technical and administrative measures to protect your Personal Information.  All personal information collected in the hiring process will be stored on servers located in the United States by our service provider, Workday.

Storage, Retention, Accessing and Updating Personal Information
Personal Information will be retained by General Motors for as long as it is necessary to provide Workday services to the Users in accordance with General Motors Information Lifecycle Management Policy, unless otherwise required by law.  You are able to update or delete your resume submitted to the GM career site at your discretion.  Job applicants in the European Union, who provide Personal Information can exercise individual rights as prescribed under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The following rights are granted:
  • right to access means the right to obtain from the General Motors whether your Personal Information are being processed and, where applicable, have access to them;
  • right to rectification and right to erasure means the right to obtain the rectification of inaccurate and/or incomplete Personal Information, as well as the erasure of Personal Information when the request is legitimate;
  • right to restriction of processing means the right to request suspension of the processing when the request is legitimate;
  • right to data portability means the right to obtain Personal Information in a structured format, ordinary used and readable, as well as the right to transfer Personal Information to other controllers;
  • right to object means the right to object to the processing of Personal Information when the request is legitimate, including when the Personal Information are processed for marketing or profiling, if applicable;
  • right to withdraw the consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal;
  • right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority in case of unlawful processing of Personal Information.
Under GDPR users can exercise these rights by writing to his/her HR department, or in case of Non-employees to the data controller, GM Holdings LLC, Michigan, USA and local legal GM entities.  In addition, users can contact the DPO at the following email address: privacy@gm.com.

Cross Border Transfer of Personal Information
Your Personal Information may be stored and processed in any country where we have other GM Subsidiaries or where we have engaged a new service provider. By using the GM career website, you consent to the transfer of your Personal Information to countries outside of your country of residence that may not have the same data protection laws as those in your home country. Anyway, be informed that General Motors has signed standard contractual clauses to cover the transfer of Personal Information from Europe to US among the Group and any time a new service provider is engaged, General Motors requires appropriate safeguards by (a) binding corporate rules in accordance with article 47 of the GDPR; (b) certification to a mechanism pursuant to Article 42 of the Data Protection Laws such as Privacy Shield; or (c) Standard Contractual Clauses.

Sensitive Information
We do not collect any sensitive Personal Information (e.g. information concerning religion, racial, ethnic origin, political opinions or other beliefs, union affiliation or activities, health, sexuality, criminal administrative proceedings or sanctions) as part of our hiring process unless required by law.  Therefore, we ask that you do not disclose or otherwise send this information through our website or directly to General Motors.

Changes to this Privacy Statement
We retain the right to change this Privacy Statement. The effective date of this Privacy Notice is noted in the header at the top of this page.  Any changes to this Privacy Statement will be posted in a timely manner.

No Contract
This Privacy Statement does not constitute a contract between General Motors and any job applicant.
