GM Information Technology is seeking to attract experienced and proven technical experts in various Mainframe technology areas that support our long-term strategic plans to further leverage the efficiencies possible with IBM Parallel Sysplex. The team is responsible for maintenance, performance optimization, capacity management, master scheduling, service continuity, implementation of global monitoring and automation solutions, and driving best-in-class availability across GM’s mainframe platforms.

In recent years, GM Information Technology has successfully executed the largest IT transformation in the history of the automotive industry, fully insourcing what once was a nearly completely outsourced IT function. The GM Mainframe team have re-platformed all Mainframe applications from the insourced lpars to new data sharing Sysplex environments.

Mainframe Database Administrators will work with other organizations in the deployment, management, and support of all mainframe Db2 for z/OS and IMS databases world-wide. This includes but is not limited to working closely with database vendors, infrastructure groups, other DBAs, and application teams to proactively install, monitor, manage, control, and upgrade consistently across GM’s mainframe database landscape. This individual will be responsible for understanding capacity requirements, implementation of global monitoring and automation solutions, providing DBMS expertise to application teams, implementing SOX controls, measuring performance, and driving best-in-class availability across GM’s mainframe database platforms.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Leader in the mainframe space.  Ability to articulate and document mainframe product roadmap and bring a team on that journey.
  • Provides thought leadership and Technical Architect support for HW and SW solutions
  • Experience in the wider IT infrastructure and the interfaces with the z/OS platform (e.g. APIs/CICD software development pipelines/Linux)
  • The ability to translate product roadmaps to real business value.

Preferred Attributes:

  • 5+ years’ relevant technical experience
  • An Arts/Science degree or STEM qualification advantageous.
  • Expertise in Db2 for z/OS version 12 and IMS version 15
  • Extensive technical knowledge of Db2 for z/OS including backup; recovery; reorganizations; universal table spaces; performance and tuning; application tuning; SQL tuning; SPUFI; explains; LOBs; DDF; DDL; partitioning / clustering; indexing
  • Extensive technical knowledge of IMS including backup; recovery; reorganizations; performance and tuning; application tuning; DBD, PSB, ACB, and MFS generation; sparse indexing; HALDBs; Dynamic Resource Definition; DBRC, logical relationships
  • Experience in z/OS, TSO, ISPF, JCL, RACF, OMEGAMON, IBM Z Workload Scheduler, RACF, SDSF
  • Experience with data modeling and database design methodologies
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge on how to support very large databases with heavy on-line and batch activities
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail
  • Great team player
