The Role:
General Motors of Canada Company - CAMI Assembly Plant is inviting applications from Engineering Students for one (1) Environmental Engineering internship position. The intern will be assigned to the above noted facility for the entire duration of the 8-month internship. General Motors of Canada - CAMI Assembly Plant received a C$1 Billion investment to convert CAMI Assembly home of Equinox vehicle into Canada’s first large-scale electric commercial vehicles manufacturing plant . In 2022, the plant was transformed into General Motors new business - BrightDrop with the ZEVO 600 and ZEVO 400 models being built at GM CAMI Assembly Plant. https://www.gobrightdrop.com
Currently, the new 400,000 sq.ft. battery module assembly facility is being built at CAMI Assembly Ingersoll for BrightDrop Zevo production as well as additional Ultium EVs built at other GM plants.

The GM CAMI Assembly Plant is a benchmark facility which includes as a three-time recipient of the ENERGY STAR certification, receiving its first certification in November 2018.
The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated, confident engineering student with strong problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills. You will be required to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to continually improve the operation for their area. A valid unrestricted Ontario driver's licence is required.
Key Responsibilities:

Support the plant’s newly installed tooling and capital equipment to support the new Battery Assembly EV electric vehicles

Coordinate industrial process wastewater and stormwater program in compliance with local by-laws and Ontario Ministry of the Environment Environmental Compliance Approvals permit (ECA).

Oversee industrial wastewater & stormwater management system (bioswales, detention ponds) sampling and 3rd party analytical program
-
Support the development of action plans for treatment of non-compliant industrial wastewater conditions

Project Manager for various as assigned environmental engineering and facility projects

Develop and coordinate plant sustainability community outreach activities and environmental awareness programs i.e. GM CAMI ecoSTEM, WHC Wildlife Habitat Certification program

Pursue new opportunities to increase environmental profile in the community and within General Motors network

Support the implementation of plant sustainability initiatives to meet GM Sustainability Goals reported through the annual GM Sustainability Report. https://www.gmsustainability.com

Coordinate and support Zero Waste and Landfill Free plant waste management program initiatives and in compliance with applicable waste legislation

Develop and analyze monthly environmental performance metrics (Plan Do Check Act PDCA continuous improvement process) and support corrective actions to ensure compliance to target objectives

Support waste management contractor in resolving waste collection issues and conducting regular plant waste audits and reviews
-
Oversee ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Internal Audit Program as per the International Organization for Standardization ISO 14001:2015 standard at CAMI Assembly and other GM facilities

Conduct plant environmental inspections, coordinate follow-up activities and effectively maintain the GM CAMI Problem Solving Reporting database

Perform other duties as required

Required Qualifications:

Pursuit of a Bachelor's (3rd and 4th year students) degree in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences

Enrolled in a qualifying Ontario co‑operative education, or internship program

Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week in Canada, and 8-month term (2 consecutive semesters) starting January 2024

Willing to work in a plant environment

Have a valid Full Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence, or equivalent Canadian out-of-province licence

Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience

High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed
-
Possess strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
