Work Arrangement

This role is hybrid. Requiring the employee to be onsite an average of 3 days per week.

The Role

GM’s Manufacturing Engineering team is driving the future of electric vehicle technology by developing world class manufacturing processes for our battery cell electrode coatings. We are looking to enhance our talent pool by adding a subject matter expert in electrode mixing & coating to help us in the pursuit of making our manufacturing processes a competitive advantage.

In this role you will be responsible for a medium to large group of engineers and support personnel engaged in determining and specifying how the product is to be manufactured. You will also be responsible for planning, procurement, fabrication, installation and upkeep of tooling required in an area in special or unusual situation. This position will be based out of the General Motors Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the process development of electrode coatings and mixing used for our advanced battery cell programs and/or the Joint Venture plants

  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support for all aspects of a coating operation including mixing, slurry delivery systems, conveyance, web treatment, coating, and drying

  • Collaborate with JV partners on optimization of coating and mixing processes

  • Develop all aspects of the coating process to allow integration of advanced materials into battery cell designs

  • Assist in the specification, procurement and qualification of equipment including lab, pilot, and manufacturing plants

  • Work with Product Engineering to ensure manufacturing and design requirements are compatible

  • Leverage external technical collaborations on coating development and scale up

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 10+ years relevant work experience in coatings processes

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in wet coating processes such as slot die, rod, gravure, and multilayer coating technologies as well as the corresponding solution/slurry making and mixing processes

  • Strong knowledge of web handling and conveyance systems

  • Work experience in chemical formulation development and scale up of formulation processes

  • Degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering (with strong materials background) or equivalent experience
