General Motors Wentzville has produced quality cars, vans, and trucks since 1983. The plant is situated on 438 acres of land in a former wheat field about 40 miles west of St. Louis in Wentzville, Missouri. Currently Wentzville assembly produces the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups as well as the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full size vans. Wentzville employs over 4600 hourly and salary workers over three shifts. The Paint Automation Engineer is responsible for the proper, defect-free automatic application of paint coatings and sealers. This work is of a highly technical nature in that the application equipment spans from phosphate and electrode position to 7-axis robots for paint and sealer. The engineer may be responsible for the direct supervision of a small group of technicians and production employees; in addition to the design, development, testing, and control of major engineering projects involving tools, equipment, plant and manufacturing processes in a manufacturing engineering activity where a considerable amount of creativity and initiative is exercised as well as a high level of independent judgment.
- Provides technical support to the production organization and establishes a course of action to accomplish completion of the job and or project.
- Proposes and evaluates manufacturing processes and equipment for assigned areas.
- Communicates between shifts and departments to implement best practices, resolve problems, and sustain consistent performance to objectives
- Paint and Dispense Process Engineer with emphasis in robotic application
- Maintains process documentation according to ISO standards.
- Coordinates the implementation of paint related Global Manufacturing Standards (GMS).
- Drive variation reductions utilizing the common GMNA Statistical Process Control methodology
- Utilizes statistical methods and data to produce best-in-class quality products (includes Voice of Customer and Voice of Process)
- Investigates process problems utilizing GMS principles.
- Supports paint shop with root cause identification of process related issues and provides process improvements driven by quality data and bench marking improvements
- Ensures compliance to the GMNA Paint Validation requirements
- Supervises all assigned indirect paint shop process personnel and production personnel.
- Supports paint shop with development of new process robot pathing for new products and mid-cycle enhancements.
- Promotes safe work practices as the highest priority and implements objectives for ergonomics, health/safety and housekeeping
- Builds and maintains good working relationships with employees, union, management and supplier community
- Understands and consistently administers national and local agreements
- Motivates, trains and develops employees to effectively perform their jobs utilizing standardized methods
- Ensures employees perform job responsibilities and empowers them to continuously improve their work by eliminating and managing constraints
- Effectively develops, motivates, and utilizes human resources in accordance with corporate and governmental policies and procedures
- Manages process requirements by utilizing Competitive Manufacturing Processes with emphasis on identification and elimination of waste
- Provides input to payroll and performs other administrative tasks as required
- Stays abreast of new technology, including robotics, computer graphics, and computer controls
Education & Training
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Internship or other relevant experience specifying, commissioning and operating paint shop equipment and systems.
- Ability to read electrical and mechanical prints.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and plan
- Ability to independently drive problems to resolution.
- Demonstrated high level analytical ability to assess and identify appropriate alternative courses of action for definition and resolution of problems that are uniquely difficult and diverse; Ability to exercise independent judgment is required
- Ability to work with plant process teams in development and continuous improvement of paint processes.
- Demonstrated high level of appropriate interpersonal skills and communication methods to effectively lead, motivate and facilitate others in group situations to meet mutual goals.
- Proficiency in team building and ability to create an environment that allows for measured risk taking
- High level of oral and written communication skills required
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and assignments with medium level of autonomy and high accountability for results (may work under the direction of a more seasoned process engineer)
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial management concepts to improve costs
- Knowledge of computer software as it pertains to manufacturing
- Fundamental understanding of the entire paint process with demonstrated knowledge of paint automation and skilled trades work
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of the high volume manufacturing process, including work process flow, plan and work station layout and tooling, related to area of responsibility
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of lean manufacturing/synchronous principles
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of computer and control systems applicable within the paint shop
- Operations level experience in automation cells; ability to troubleshoot process improvement needs as well as root cause identification of equipment failures.
- Experience with Fanuc Robots; P-200, P-500, P-700, S-500, M-710, M-2000 and Paint Pro automation simulation software.
- Familiarity with Phosphate/Electrode position, Robotic painting and sealing
- Experience with different application methods; seam seal, hem seal, LASD, foam, paint guns, paint bells
