Position summary

Plan andexecute collaborative scientific or engineering research, generating newknowledge and innovative technology for application in materials, products,systems or processes specifically related to advanced technology development atGeneral Motors.

 

Summaryof Job Responsibilities:

Implementsurface characterization techniques to support automotive research developmentand engineering needs

Developmaterials characterization and failure analysis techniques for automotivecomponents.  Guide failure analysisprocess and drive problem resolution via the application of analytical andphysical chemistry techniques.

Collaborateand support product teams as required for material or product development

Maintainsurface analysis lab operation and write SOPs, ensure compliance with safetyprocedures

Capableof leading and managing research projects and experiments plans individually orwithin a team.

Generateinnovative ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish/execute detailedtechnical work plans.

Communicateresults internally and externally through timely, high-quality presentations,reports and external publications.

Maintainup-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments to grow coretechnical skills and competencies.

Buildand manage relationships and grow partnership with divisional staff to meetproject objectives, maintain required product knowledge and successfully assistin problem solving.

Observeand ensure that safe practices are implemented and followed throughout theworkplace.  Write and review SOPs.

Supportthe implementation and continuation of a 5S working environment.

Provideguidance in selecting future capital investments that align with the laboratoryneeds and the business vision and strategy. Ensure timing and budget requirements are met.

Summary of Job Requirements:

  • Thorough theoretical understanding and ability to apply in depth knowledge of scientific principles and state of the art research methodologies.

    Knowledge and experience of Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) surface analysis technique is required: technique, instrument maintenance and instrument operation.

    Experience in writing technical reports and publications is required

    Experience in additional surface analysis techniques, e.g. scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy, is highly desired

    Experience in Li-ion battery analysis is highly desired

    Experience in chemical separation techniques, e.g. gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) is highly desired

    Consistently demonstrate and support teamwork.
     
    Experience, education, and skills required:

    M.S. and/or PhD. in science/engineering disciplines required.

    Individual Contributor, ≥ 3 years work experience.
    3-7 years relevant work experience.
    Experience with TOF-SIMS, XPS is required.

    Experience or knowledge of SEM, FTIR, Raman is highly desired

    Experience or knowledge of GC, LC is highly desired
    Experience in Li-ion batteries is highly desired

    Demonstrated technical knowledge and expertise with a high level of analytical ability and creativity.

    Adaptability to working with multiple projects in different technical areas.

    Strong verbal and written communication skills

    Experience, education, and skills required:
