Position summary

 

Creative Interior or Exterior Designer Intern

General Purpose of Position:
 
Develop new designs for automotive vehicles or other products where decisions are made with general practices and standards. Follow the design process from the sketch form to the final release of model. Support world-class quality execution of innovative exterior and interior production programs and concepts. Integrate customer focused needs and brand differentiation into all aesthetic proposals.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Create original design ideas.
Make perspective sketches and renderings in scale and full size sufficient to communicate new design ideas. 
Develop two and three-dimensional mock-ups of proposed design solutions. 
Work with studio engineers, modelers, other designers and service and fabrication personnel in the development of new ideas in both two and three-dimensional form to required finish. 
Stay current with design trends.
Present new thoughts and designs both orally and visually.  
Actively identifies new areas for learning and takes advantage of learning opportunities.

 

Skills and Abilities:
Creative proficiency with supporting portfolio.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

Creative Clay Sculptor Intern

General Purpose of Position:
 
Create fundamental clay or digital models by developing aesthetic surfaces which meet time and quality requirements as directed by Sculpting Leadership for assigned programs. Work in a group situation, collaborating with Design and Engineering stakeholders and supportive studio personnel.  Follow established modeling best practices and procedures while contributing to the execution of property plans.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Creates new and improves existing models using hand modeling or milling.
Produces finished modes to design and engineering specifications.
Understands program timelines and is proactive regarding task completion.
Knowledge of current trends in design.

Knowledge of technology, production methods and materials used in clay modeling.

 

Skills and Abilities:
Creative proficiency with supporting portfolio.
Strong understanding of line, form and surface development.
Effectively uses modeling equipment.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Good Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

 

Education and Training:

Creative Digital Sculptor Intern

General Purpose of Position:
 
Create fundamental clay or digital models by developing aesthetic surfaces which meet time and quality requirements as directed by Sculpting Leadership for assigned programs. Work in a group situation, collaborating with Design and Engineering stakeholders and supportive studio personnel.  Follow established modeling best practices and procedures while contributing to the execution of property plans.

Produces finished modes to design and engineering specifications.
Understands basic program timelines and is proactive regarding task completion.
Demonstrated curve and surface creation capabilities for development of “Class A” quality surfacing.

Creative Exterior Lighting Designer Intern

General Purpose of Position:
 
Generate creative, fresh and innovative designs for the Exterior Lighting studio. This work can include the intricate design of head-lamps and tail-lamps, as well as accent and ancillary lighting. Work duties involve a considerable amount of strategic thought and creativity as well as a definite degree of skill, accuracy and coordination. Must be able to design products within a prescribed brand strategy. Integrate customer focused needs and brand differentiation into all aesthetic proposals.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Create original design ideas.
Follow the design process from rough ideation sketches, to the final release of 3D data.
Make perspective sketches and renderings to communicate new design ideas.
Develop two and three-dimensional mock-ups of proposed design solutions.

General Purpose of Position:
 
Contribute to the styling and functional design development of interior branded components and graphic user interface solutions. Work with a team of creative designers, engineers and external suppliers to provide world class user experiences.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Create original and compelling design ideas.
Incorporate innovative technologies, great usability and brand vision into designs.
Make perspective sketches and renderings to communicate new design ideas.
Help to define and support the execution of a vision for branded components.

Make presentations of new thoughts and designs, both orally and visually.

Color and Trim Designer Intern

Color and Trim Intern will help develop innovative and competitive exterior colors for a wide-range of vehicle programs and brands. Intern will develop and integrate customer focused need and brand differentiation into all aesthetic proposals.  This will include extensive benchmarking of industry trends in fashion, competitive analysis, home/contract furnishing and product design.

Brand Identity Designer Intern

 

General Purpose of Position:
Work independently and in collaboration with the Global Industrial Design team to develop new designs and strategic direction for the graphic, environmental and experiential expression of the GM Brands.  Examples of potential projects include development of vehicle badging and identity in 2D and 3D applications, exploration of interior design themes to express branded environments, and graphic design assignments to support brand communications.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Create original design solutions for brand expression including typographic design, exhibit and environmental design and graphic communications.
Make sketches and renderings sufficient to communicate new ideas.
Explore and develop visual brand strategies and brand-specific design solutions.

Creative Animation/VFX Intern

 

General Purpose of Position:
Candidate will choose a current GM vehicle and produce two CGI promotional images, and one promotional video. These should promote and generate excitement for an upcoming vehicle ‘reveal.’
             
The project will begin with research into what automotive companies currently do, followed by pitches which will be presented to Design Executive Leadership. This pitch will be required to show style and story, as well as brand character and include a storyboard.

Final presentation will consist of a verbal presentation on visual and emotional choices made for the vehicle, as well as review the final video and images.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Creative development of story and art direction.
Execution of concept resulting in 2x still images and 1x promotional film.
Managing deadlines and own project’s production schedule.

Design Quality Execution Lead Intern

General Purpose of Position:
The Summer Intern will be part of the Design Quality / Program Management group which is in the process of refining the Design Quality Execution Enablers. In this position, the intern candidate will be responsible for the collection and analysis of Customer and Benchmarking Data as well as integrating with Design and Engineering in the refinement of component interface design for Best Practice Development.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The main goal of the project is to update the current Interior/ Exterior Design Best Practices:
* Gather and Analyze Data to support Voice of the Customer Inputs
* Provide Executive reports
Upon completing the above responsibilities successfully, the candidate will acquire the following skills:
Ability to work with cross-functional SMT/BFO teams to incorporate updates.
Understand the role Best Practices play within the Development Process.
Ability to work effectively with management, team members and colleagues from various Internal Design and Engineering organizations.
Exposure critical to Design Development Initiatives.
Once the assigned responsibilities are completed successfully, the candidate will have an opportunity to present his/her contribution and the positive impact reflected in the Best Practice updates to the Design Quality Leadership Team from the internship period.
