Position summary

This senior tax analyst position is a rotational opportunity within the Tax Staff, located at the corporate headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a candidate looking to learn, expand their skills, and develop their tax career. GM Tax offers several areas of specialization in which individuals can make an impact, including: Tax Accounting, Tax Compliance, Tax Audits, International Tax, State and Local Tax, Transfer Pricing, Value Added Tax, Customs, and Tax Planning. This is a great opportunity to gain broad exposure and increase your knowledge base.

This position requires tax and accounting expertise, decision making ability, and initiative. Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Develop general corporate tax technical expertise as well as specialized tax knowledge
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual income tax provisions
  • Assist in preparing quarterly and annual income tax-related SEC filings
  • Operate Sarbanes Oxley 404 tax controls and support related testing
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of tax returns, including quarterly estimates
  • Recommend and implement processes that improve the efficiency and accuracy of tax accounting and compliance related activities
  • Partner with business units and other departments within Corporate Finance to ensure the accuracy of tax returns and financial statement balances
  • Provide support in the review and analysis of proposed and existing tax laws, regulations, and rulings
  • Build and update tax planning models
  • Assist in the management of federal and state audits, including drafting responses to government inquires and analysis of audit workpapers
  • Work with other members of the team in developing, implementing and defending return positions
  • Create project plans, solve problems, and develop new methods of analysis

Basic Required:

  • Professional Certification: Certified Public Accountant and Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 4-6 years of accounting experience 
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and manage work load within statutory and internal deadlines
  • Well-developed computer and system skills, including experience with finance enterprise systems and tax provision systems (e.g., SAP, OneSource)
  • Demonstrated high levels of productivity and strong performance
  • Basic Preferred:
  • Professional Certification: Master’s degree in Taxation or Accounting; other advanced degree or training 
  • Corporate tax experience, including experience in tax compliance, planning and defense
  • Demonstrated effective analytical and problem solving skills
  • Self-motivated, with strong interpersonal, team and partnering skills
