Position summary


  • Develop comprehensive communications plans including strategy, goals, budget and tactics
  • Leverage existing media relationships and cultivate new relationships to support brand and executive communications efforts specifically for the African American consumer segment in coordination with the brands and their agencies
  • Supervise agencies and contract resources working on brand and corporate diversity communications
  • Represent the Diversity Communications team as part of the broader, integrated brand teams and support/attend brand programs across the country
  • Collaborate cross functionally with Diversity Marketing to tell compelling GM diversity stories with external audiences
  • Create content for press releases and byline articles
  • Draft speeches and messaging for executive leadership on diversity topics for external audiences
  • Create unique opportunities to effectively engage diversity media and influencers on a national scale
  • Manage strategic sponsorship and event activations
  • Work with corporate social media team(s) to engage audiences across traditional and new media
  • Serve as key integration point for Corporate Diversity team on diversity communications issues and opportunities
  • Key integration point for Product/Technology teams, Supplier Diversity and Dealer Diversity staff on diversity issues
  • Garner support for diversity initiatives from key leaders (internal and external) and stakeholder

Requirements/ Skills and Behaviors:

  • Strategic thinking, problem solving and presentation skills
  • Emotional maturity and professionalism; intellectual curiosity
  • Ability to build effective relationships with key stakeholders and interface with all staff levels
  • Creativity and a willingness to share new ideas
  • Diversity media relations and executive communications experience
  • Exceptional verbal, written and communication skills
  • Ability to develop and execute communications plans 
  • Strategic social media experience
  • Business acumen - demonstrate fiscal responsibility
  • Skilled at managing through ambiguity
  • Extensive agency management/partnership experience
  • Juggler - manage multiple projects and perform well under pressure
  • Ability to travel
  • Minimum 8-10 years communications experience
  • Bachelors in communications, PR, journalism preferred
