Purpose

Pleaseindicate the primary purpose of the position and describe the major expectedresults or objectives and those major factors that distinguish this positionfrom others. 

 

The Appearance Definition Lead is assigned Programs to ensure we meet the aesthetic Design Intent vision to “Design, Build and Sell the World’s Best Vehicles”.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate, document and release Design Intent Appearance Attributes, i.e. CTDAR (Color & Trim Design Appearance Requirements), on time and with quality; includes Statement of Requirements for Sourcing (Appendix F5)
  • To provide documented Design Intent Appearance Harmony for execution of ALL Interior, Exterior, and Accessories; (except Body Color)
  • Ensure GVDP Elements for release of the CTDAR are met with the Program Team
 
 
Position Tasks and Responsibilities

Business / Strategic:
  • Must develop and maintain strategic relationships with Design Studio, Color & Trim, Engineering VSE and DE, Program Management (both Design and Eng), and other key Program Team members across assigned program(s). 
  • Ability to “seek to understand”
  • Drive Appearance Strategies to meet Design Intent
  • Ensure high fidelity of requirements that drives Design Intent of appearance that creates Appearance Harmony
  • On Time support of CTDAR releases and Appearance SOR Appendix F5 (Appendix B2 EBOM F5)
  • Voice of the Customer for Appearance Attributes, working with functions in Design and Engineering
  • Understanding of the competition for materials usage
 
People:
  • Build strong relationships within Design:  Studios, Color & Trim Creative Designer, Production Studio Leads, and within DQ, i.e. Brand Team, Cost Lead, etc.
  • Develop strong cross functional relationships outside of Design, i.e. VSE, DE, Materials Eng, Program Management, Marketing,  Program Team, etc.
 
Program Execution:
  • Meet GVDP Element deliverables for CTDAR (Color & Trim Design Appearance Requirements)
  • Support Frontloading, including Competitive Material Benchmarking
  • Work with various functions to ensure feasibility and harmonious execution of Design Intent part appearance
  • Lead Appearance Definition Meetings to support Coarse to Fine development of the CTDAR to support Releases and SOR F5
  • Prepare Design’s appearance requirements for sourcing  documents (F5 / EBOM)
  • Lead milestone assessments for Appearance Gate Reviews, including Virtual Assessment
  • Lead issue resolution & escalate when resolution is not achieved in a timely manner
  • Support Appearance Requirements at Launch Harmony Review
  • Manage Appearance maintenance for the life of the vehicles(s) assigned

  • Expert in complex Microsoft Office with emphasis on Excel functions / macros
  • Knowledge of Photoshop
  • Understanding of GVDP (Global Vehicle Development Process) and Elements
  • Understanding / Knowledge of Appearance Processes, Materials, Manufacturing Processes
  • Knowledge of  Product and its Appearance
  • Knowledge of Purchasing Process / eSOR
  • Knowledge of CR/DN system
  • Knowledge of PPC
 
Required Skills:
  • Ability to Lead definition of Appearance Requirement to create Harmony
  • Excellent Program Management skills
  • Excellent working ability in Microsoft Office, i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop
  • Ability to think left brain / right brain – to visualize harmony from an Excel Chart
  • Understanding of Materials / Manufacturing Processes and how they affect to deliver Appearance
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – ability to verbalize appearance attributes to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to speak confidently and with ease to Senior Leadership
  • Excellent Meeting Norms to effectively conduct and manage Appearance Materials Definition Meetings
  • Ability to interact well with internal and external customers, i.e. outside of Design, Suppliers, Marketing, etc
  • High level of analytical skills – investigate / balance / direct part level appearance

  • Ability to multi task and deal with a diverse portfolio of work
  • Outstanding planning and organization skills and a drive to meet tight deadlines
  • Prefer some ability in Vis Mock Up
 
Required Experience/Education:
  • Bachelor Degree with qualifications in Engineering, Design, Business / Communications (exceptions may be granted based on work experience)
  • Significant experience working on design or engineering of vehicle interiors / exteriors; materials and manufacturing processes
  • DE / DRE, Validation, Specification Analyst experience would be helpful but not required
