Position summary

Essential Functions:  

  • Coordinating/directing health & safety activities for facility or functional areas to eliminate industrial accidents. 
  • Advises management on continued development of safety and health culture 
  • Provides direction, trains, develops and evaluates employees 
  • Assists in the implementation and interprets the safety and health provisions of local and national labor agreements 
  • Facilitates the investigation of accidents and/or injuries; conducts safety audits, surveys, and inspections to verify appropriate compliance
  • Maintains awareness of state and federal safety regulations; corporate polices and procedures regarding safety and industrial health 
  • Develops and implements programs to reduce job related injuries 
  • Meets with local union representative and leads in resolution of safety matters 
  • Designs, implements, administration of plant safety rules and instructions 
  • Reviews and approves new equipment and methods for potential hazards 
  • Analyzes safety statistics and develops recommendation with consultation of customers 
  • Trains leadership in safety related processes and assists supervisors in the safety training of employees 
  • Provide technical guidance to management on Health & Safety Issues 
  • Participating in Health & Safety committees 
  • Provide plant leadership on health and safety modules 
  • Maintain positive relationships with local union leadership and management 
  • Accompany compliance officers and prepares required data 
  • Demonstrates complete job knowledge and understanding of assigned work area 
  • Takes input from employees, addresses work-related issues and provides feedback to employees on their concerns.  
Qualifications:
  • BS/BA Occupational Safety/Industrial Hygiene or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • BS/BA Occupational Safety/Industrial Hygiene or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills including facilitation, negotiation and problem resolution 
  • Demonstrated ability influence at the leadership level 
  • Ability to build trust and respect at all levels of the organization 
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, set and execute to work plans 
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, prioritization and project management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills. 
  • Discretion in dealing with highly confidential matters 
  • Proficient in MS Office and related software programs
  • Understanding of GM Global Manufacturing System 
  • Safety Certifications as required
