The Role:

The purpose of this position is to characterize different metals, polymers, and coatings for a materials analysis laboratory engaged in root cause, failure analysis and materials characterization for “PEM Fuel Cell” research and commercialization. The candidate must have prior hands-on experience with different techniques in mechanical and material testing and instrumentation with specialty focus on electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe (EPMA).

This position requires sound technical knowledge and expertise related to the functional area of responsibility. You will need prior experience and/or knowledge of mechanical, chemical, material engineering and instrumentation. Translates business objectives to actionable work and supports leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Work with multiple internal customers (product development, research, manufacturing, validation scientists and engineers) and projects simultaneously to provide a deep dive understanding of parts performance and failures modes

  • Responsible for testing parts from Fuel Cell Design and Development teams to determine diffusion and dimensional properties and chemical concentrations using different analytical techniques

  • Determine the chemical presence and properties of organic and inorganic materials qualitatively and quantitatively using SEM and EPMA primarily.

  • Calibrate, operate, and maintain different analytical instruments including but not limited to XPS, XRD, Raman, SEM and EPMA analysis

  • Initiate method development to improve data collection and analysis efficiency

  • Perform measurement system studies (MSA), including Gage R&R to quantify uncertainty, capability, and potential limitations of instruments.

  • Run routine samples, develop new methods, present results to different levels of the organization, draw conclusions and provide recommendations
