This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Design Studio in Pasadena, California on a full-time basis.

General Motors Advanced Design in Pasadena, CA is seeking a Lead Fabricator responsible for leading a team of skilled trade employees. This position requires extensive prototype fabrication background, excellent organizational, project management and leadership skills. The candidate must be proficient in specialty vehicle and concept car builds, with in-depth knowledge of fabrication technologies and techniques required to produce hand-built vehicles.

The Design Lead General Fabrication role is hands-on, requiring full involvement in the entire build process.  This includes collaborating across multiple shop areas, as well as other design departments, overseeing full project builds, and working closely with project manager to ensure efficiency, quality, and deadlines are met.  The candidate should be proactive in team meetings, offering insights, voicing concerns, and suggesting improvements.  Maintaining a professional, positive attitude and mentoring new and existing team members is essential to fostering a strong team environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Oversees the entire build process of projects, ensuring efficiency, quality, and deadlines are met
  • Lead a team of 5-10 Skilled Trades personal and apprentices while ensuring high standards
  • Interpret and analyze prints with the ingenuity to bench engineer as required
  • Exhibit a safety mindset while identifying, taking ownership, resolving safety concerns, leading safety investigations, and supporting the safety champions
  • Develop standardize work procedures, TIS’s (Task Instruction Sheet) and performs annual staff reviews
  • Supports ADCA (Advanced Design California) team members and supervisors from other Design Fabrication Shops
  • Participate in meetings and proactively voice concerns or suggestions to enhance processes
  • Foster an environment which encourages team member involvement, continuous improvement, and skill development
  • Provide a leadership in implementation of major department initiatives and company goals
  • Drive first time quality in the build process of models
  • Takes ownership of specific shop function (i.e. hard modeling) ensuring the area is ready for work, including material processing, cleanliness and excellence of product outcomes
  • Mentor new and existing team members to develop skills and maintain a strong team dynamic
  • Ensure a professional and positive attitude is maintained throughout the shop
  • Communicate between shifts and cross-functionally to implement best practices, resolve vehicle build and timing issues while maintaining quality expectations

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • 7+ (10 preferred) years of experience in metal fabrication including hands-on experience with multiple fabrication disciplines and materials (metal, wood, plastics, composites, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, associate degree, and/or equivalent experience
  • Extensive experience in prototype fabrication and concept/specialty vehicle builds
  • Strong ability in interpreting 3D math files and engineering drawings
  • Proficiency in computer software and functionality as it relates to vehicle builds, workflow tracking, data history, reports, and organizational activity
  • In depth knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes and the ability to influence improvements
  • Experience in coordinating/delegating tasks among the various team members for multiple projects while managing workload and resources balance
  • Capable of drafting standardized work and task instruction sheets and functional understanding of GMS Principles
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively organize, plan and execute daily objectives
  • Analytical ability to interpret and resolve complex problems
  • Experience mentoring and developing more junior teammates
  • Ability to work standing or kneeling for at least 8 hours per day
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work with hand-held electric and manual tools for at least 8 hours per day. Requires the ability to use grasping/squeezing motion for at least 8 hours per day

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • 10 years of experience in metal fabrication
  • Experience with machine tools, measurement devices, and mechanical tools
  • Experience in various fabrication technologies i.e., CNC Machining, Waterjet, Paint Processes, Welding Techniques, etc.
  • Applied knowledge of hand fabrication techniques and the manufacture of show quality parts
  • Skilled in on-the-spot vehicle repairs, cosmetic, electrical, and mechanical
  • Experience in building chassis

Relocation: This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.

Compensation:

  • The expected base compensation for this role is: 99,900 and 159,600 Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • You also need to include general information about potential commissions, if applicable.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
