Battery Mixing and Coating Engineer
Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to GM Global Technical Center – Research Administration Building in Warren, Michigan on a full-time basis, 5 days per week.
The Role
As a Battery Mixing and Coating Engineer, you will contribute to R&D initiatives within GM’s Battery Process Research and Innovation, with a focus on the mixing and coating operational process and cross functionally helping the team to better advance next-generation technologies in battery chemistry, cell architecture, and system integration. This includes learning and supporting the full cell fabrication process.
This role will support translating fundamental research into scalable solutions that improve performance, safety, cost, and improve reliability.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

Follow all corporate safety standards and site safety policies, e.g. g-Risk, g-Comply, PTP, Lockout, chemical management, etc.

Work closely with multi-disciplined teams to understand functional requirements and implement appropriate technical solutions for various research projects.

Prepare aqueous and non-aqueous slurries with specified compositions and viscosities.

Coat slurries onto substrates via slot die, doctor blade and reverse comma coating techniques.

Write test procedures and use appropriate techniques to confirm physical data gathered from testing.

Ensure functional readiness of cell fabrication facility systems through preventive maintenance, pre-task diagnostics/checklist, task instruction sheet, database maintenance, etc.

Establish course of action, timelines and milestones for projects/assignments.

Meet the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers/stakeholders.

Deal well with ambiguity and effectively cope with change/troubleshooting.

Work effectively both independently and closely with others.

Consult with the manager and principal investigator as required by assignments.

Work cross functionally with the team and ensure quality of process and product.

Communicate complex material before, during and after projects are initiated.

Stay abreast of new technologies and competitive products.

Actively identify new areas for learning and take advantage of learning opportunities with a focus on continuous improvement.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

B.S. in Science or Engineering field, preferred Chemical Engineering

Ability to work in an export controlled environment

Detailed understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation for chemical and material systems

Demonstrated analytical ability to problem solving using systematic engineering process
-
Knowledge of coin cell fabrication
-
Experience preparing aqueous and non-aqueous slurries within specified compositions and viscosities
-
Experience coating metal foils via slot die, doctor blade and back coating techniques and/or other techniques
-
Knowledge of laboratory tools and materials characterization equipment
-
Ability to travel periodically for training and on-site technology transfer
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
-
1-3+ years of relevant work/plant experience in cell fabrication and assembly or chemical pilot plant (including tab welding, cell sealing, cell degassing and resealing)

Hands-on experience with battery cycler operation
-
Support cell assembly tasks including notching, stacking, tab welding, cell sealing, cell degassing and resealing
-
Operate battery cyclers to complete electrochemical evaluation
