描述

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

System Safety Engineering is a multidisciplinary organization that is chartered with the goal of assessing vehicle features and systems to ensure that they are designed to be safe and free from unreasonable risk. System Safety Engineering spans the entire lifecycle of the vehicle from early in the vehicle development process through production and customer use.

Our team is looking for a technically agile and highly energetic System Safety Engineer to support propulsion in both the engine controls and/or electrification domains. This work directly supports overall System Safety Case development for these technologies that are critical in achieving GM’s path to Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion!

The System Safety Engineer will work in a fast-paced and iterative work environment to ensure that system safety processes and methods are applied during the creation, development, and validation of Engine Control and Electrification Propulsion Systems. They will be responsible for specifying requirements so that propulsion system safety can be achieved under all operating and customer usage conditions. This role requires application of systems level thinking while partnering across the engineering organization to deploy System Safety solutions across our diverse and evolving technology set.

What You’ll Do

  • Execute GM System Safety Process as it applies to Engine Control and Electrification Propulsion Systems.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with hardware, software, service, manufacturing, advanced engineering, for developing and allocating safety specifications

  • Develop, track and manage the execution of the Engine Controls and Electrification Propulsion system safety requirements

  • Work with component and vehicle engineering to ensure safety system/subsystem interfaces are implemented as defined

  • Support product engineering teams with system safety input for both internal and external programs

  • Lead informal and formal peer reviews for propulsion system safety process work products

  • Escalate unresolved safety related issues

  • Communicate and explain the system safety process throughout the corporation as needed

  • Use change management process/tools for configuration management of requirements

  • Drive common implementation where possible and reduce complexity

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or another related Engineering degree.

  • 5 or more years’ experience in developing electrical/electrical mechanical systems and/or components

  • Knowledge of verification and validation processes

  • Understanding of hardware design, software interfaces and failure modes

  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of electromechanical mechanisms and controls systems

  • Understanding of serial data communications

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Candidates with one of the following engineering degrees: MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering or Computer Science Engineering

  • In depth knowledge and real-world experience executing electrification and/or engine controls calibration or control systems production deliverables

  • Understanding of safety monitor software and implementation in the Engine Controls or Electrification Propulsion domain.

  • In-depth knowledge of Systems Safety Engineering methods and effective scoping of the required work products

  • Strong understanding of vehicle integration and/or have developed other systems that closely interact with propulsion controls subsystems.

  • Understanding of GM’s serial data communications

  • Understanding of distributed and networked real-time control systems

  • Understanding of system reliability, safety, monitoring, and diagnostic technologies and processes

  • Understanding of embedded software development, testing and associated tools
