GM Defense is looking for a Chassis Controls Engineer that is interested in creating the future of GM Defense-related vehicles. The GM Defense Performance Team is a dynamic, fast paced environment where every day provides a new problem to solve that is having an impact on our current & future defense ground vehicles. This includes participating in the AVD process, establishing vehicle level and subsystem requirements. Then following that project through protype builds, integrating the vehicle and then launching a new vehicle program.
The Role
The Chassis Controls Performance Engineer has responsibility for the leading development and tuning direction of the Chassis Controls System for a given vehicle, vehicle platform and involvement across the particular architecture. Chassis Controls includes the anti-lock braking system (ABS), the Traction Control System, the Yaw Stability Control System (Stabilitrack), All Wheel Drive or 4 Wheel Drive controls, and Vehicle Mode Controls.
What You'll Do
You'll be responsible to define performance requirements, and lead the integration of the controls with the HiL, vehicle hardware and software to achieve these requirements. This includes some or all of the following specific tasks:
- Develop vehicle level implementation of chassis control subsystems - anti-lock brakes (ABS), Traction Control, Stability Control Systems (yaw stability), All Wheel Drive or 4 Wheel Drive controls.
- Integrate the control systems with each other and with the vehicle hardware and software. Work with controls system supplier engineers to adapt systems to the car.
- Lead, Mentor & execute the design of the vehicle development test plan and material to support it – calendar, events, milestones, test vehicles, locations, supplier scheduling, development parts, and demonstrations.
- Lead defining system requirements and then tune control systems with supplier to achieve the vehicle performance requirements.
- Create and apply models (MATLAB or other) to determine system performance and interactions analytically to guide hardware development as applicable.
- Lead, mentor and execute applying test procedures with vehicle on artificial and real road surfaces to determine vehicle system performance and optimize system interactions. Perform snow and ice handling evaluations, traction evaluations, handling evaluations including evasive maneuvers, brake stopping distance evaluations. This includes dry pavement, wet, ice, snow, sand, gravel, and dirt.
- Set up vehicle measurement instrumentation and execute measurements as required during development to guide process. Interpret data. Measure vehicle as part of the validation of car to requirements – both mvss (federal) and global and internal.
- Complete Validation and required reporting for each variant
- Demonstrate vehicle performance of controls systems to management and media
- Initiate documents to provide engineering authority for design group and suppliers to execute design, calibration, software.
- Exhibit leadership amongst cross functional team in working with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and to support build programs
- Support assembly plant at start of production as required
- Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 5+ years of defense or automotive engineering experience
- BS/MS in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Physics or related technical degrees
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate test vehicles
- Able and willing to travel as needed. Winter test in Northern MI, DPG for summer test, onsite customer support and/or media events as required
- Candidate must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee).
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- 3 years of HIL experience in Chassis Controls Systems or Equivalent
- Design, development or validation experience with chassis controls systems such as ABS, traction control systems, or vehicle stability systems
- In depth understanding of control system theory – classical and digital
- Strong engineering foundation –understands Physics
- General understanding of the operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively within teams
- Ability to lead cross functional teams to desired results
- Proficient in dealing with multiple facets of ambiguity at any given time
- Self-motivated and directed, passion to learn
