The Facilities Electrical Engineer / Site Utility Manager (SUM) ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of facility electrical systems and site utilities. This role supports facility infrastructure, utility systems, and capital projects while partnering with operations, maintenance, contractors, utility providers, and cross-functional teams.

The SUM oversees reliable delivery of electricity, water, fire protection, steam, condensate, stormwater, compressed air, chilled water, and natural gas. The role also supports energy and water reduction initiatives, responds to utility emergencies as the site subject matter expert, and oversees steam and chilled water plant operations.

This is a full-time, onsite position.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical and Utility Systems Management

  • Support medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems, including primary substations and site utility feeds.

  • Oversee steam and chilled water plant operations and reliable delivery of site utilities.

  • Manage preventive maintenance, repairs, testing, and upgrades for generators, automatic transfer switches, UPS systems, and other electrical assets.

  • Support facility controls and electrical systems for ventilation, chilled water, lighting, monitoring, security, fire alarms, and other critical infrastructure.

  • Help develop maintenance strategies for steam, chilled water, and other utility systems.

  • Provide electrical engineering input during project planning to confirm utility capacity, quality, reliability, and compatibility.

  • Coordinate contractors, procurement, purchase requests, and project execution to deliver safe, timely, and cost-effective results.

  • Serve as the primary contact for electric, natural gas, and municipal water providers, local businesses, and regulatory agencies.

  • Coordinate downtime and shutdown plans, including the Utility Shutdown Request (USR) process and holiday shutdowns.

  • Communicate real-time status during utility interruptions, shutdowns, and recovery activities.

  • Support energy and water reduction, utility reliability, and infrastructure assessment initiatives using GM2100 for tracking, forecasting, and monthly cost approvals.

  • Drive continuous improvement related to utility interruptions, safety concerns, and environmental violations.

  • Maintain electrical asset data, systems documentation, and required records.

  • Ensure compliance with GM safety requirements, electrical safe work practices, environmental expectations, and applicable regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; equivalent education and experience may be considered.

  • Five or more years of experience with industrial electrical distribution systems rated 13.8 kV and below.

  • Five or more years of experience with substations, motor control centers, busway, power and control panels, and drives.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical one-line drawings, switching diagrams, and technical documentation.

  • Experience managing electrical engineering or facilities projects from planning through execution.

  • Working knowledge of the NEC, OSHA, MIOSHA, and applicable electrical safety standards.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with contractors, plant teams, utility providers, and leadership.

Technical Skills

  • Medium- and low-voltage distribution systems

  • Primary substations and switchgear

  • Overhead electrical distribution

  • Steam and compressed air systems

  • Arc flash analysis and short-circuit studies

  • Backup generators, automatic transfer switches, and UPS systems

  • Facility utility infrastructure

  • Electrical controls for facility operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • AutoCAD and electrical drawing management experience.

  • Experience with MAXIMO, SAP, PDPM, NPP, or similar asset and project management systems.

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs, Siemens S7, VFDs, and industrial networks such as DeviceNet and Ethernet.

  • Demonstrated experience applying electrical safe work practices in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
