Why work for us

Our culture is focused on building inclusive teams, where differences and unique perspectives are embraced so you can contribute to your fullest potential as you pursue your career. Our locations feature a variety of work environments, including open workspaces and virtual connection platforms to inspire productivity and flexible collaboration. And we are proud to support employee volunteer interests and make it a priority to join together in efforts that give back to our communities.

The Role:

The Lab System Integration Engineering (LSIE) team is a part of a central engineering resource group that supports various battery, component, and propulsion test laboratories as well as vehicle garages in Pontiac, Warren, and Milford, Michigan. The Test Site Systems Engineer will directly support the Global Battery Systems Lab (GBSL), the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC), and the Root Cause Warranty Center (RWC) at the Warren Technical Center campus with a focus on the software environments and automation platforms that enable safe, efficient testing.

The Global Battery Systems Lab (GBSL-W) and Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC) utilize various automation software systems to operate 24/7. The Global Battery Systems Lab has testing capabilities that include traditional environmental testing, vibration, safety and abuse, exploratory development testing, and maintains commonality with GM’s battery lab located in Shanghai, China (GBSL-S). The Wallace Battery Innovation Center houses battery cell test chambers, cell formation chambers, a material synthesis lab, a slurry mixing and processing lab, a coating room, an electrolyte production lab, and a forensics lab with material analysis equipment and advanced software The Root Cause Warranty Center (RWC) performs advanced diagnostic and failure analysis on returned components as well as full systems, using specialized test equipment, data analytics, plus forensic methods to resolve complex warranty issues. These labs and the results they produce are used by GM’s growing team of engineers working on advanced batteries and electrified vehicles, in support of the vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.

This role manages the lab software ecosystem for GBSL, WBCIC, and the RWC. Scope includes TCWS (test cell workstation) builds and configurations, LSIE’s test automation toolchain, small operational applications, the Influx/Telegraf/Grafana metrics stack, Databricks interfaces for moving lab data into analytics pipelines, and Windows-based operating environments for critical test PCs. The engineer will use enterprise automation tooling (e.g. Ansible, Baramundi) to provision test systems, manage fleets, execute software deployments, coordinate environment changes, maintain configuration records plus change records, and standardize how test sites use enterprise toolchains. The focus is on solutions that meet operator and lab needs while staying aligned with enterprise direction.

An engineer seeking end-to-end ownership of the software backbone that keeps more than 100 battery test beds running across GBSL, WBCIC, and the RWC will be well-matched to this position. The engineer in this position will design and standardize back-end environments, deployment pipelines, Windows test-fleet automation, and metrics pipelines that connect enterprise platforms to day-to-day lab operations while building a broad skill set across DevOps, site systems, and large-scale test automation. This is an onsite role at the Warren Technical Center to ensure direct engagement with lab operations, test systems, and partner teams.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Support testing PC builds, related test software configuration, and deployments across GBSL/WBCIC/RWC in partnership with DevOps engineers.
  • Maintain software environments on critical test PCs by coordinating OS and security updates with IT while managing LSIE-owned applications plus configurations.
  • Own lifecycle management for key test systems, including version control, compatibility planning, environment upgrades, and major platform migrations.
  • Own the metrics pipeline for lab test systems across Influx, Telegraf, Grafana, and test automation systems
  • Support and maintain LSIE’s test automation toolchain that underpins daily lab operations at GBSL/WBCIC/RWC.
  • Maintain software change logs, configuration records, runbooks, and standard test PC images to support traceability, audit readiness, and faster root-cause analysis.
  • Act as the technical bridge between LSIE, Computer Aided Testing (CAT), and IT for infrastructure decisions that affect the test environment.
  • Evaluate, pilot, and implement tools from pertinent teams so they fit site needs
  • Standardize software support approaches, toolchains, and configurations across GBSL/WBCIC/RWC to reduce redundant local solutions
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and escalation support for software issues that impact test execution, working with LSIE application engineers, lab operations, CAT, and IT.
  • Plan and execute complex software and infrastructure changes that affect the labs including source control or license migrations, environment upgrades, and other enterprise-driven changes
  • Support weekend or off-shift needs for planned changes and high-priority software issues.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • B.S.E. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • High level of interest in the vehicle electrification space
  • 2–7 years of software engineering, DevOps, or backend systems experience supporting production or test environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one high-level programming language, e.g. C, C++, C#, Java, Python
  • Experience supporting Windows-based test or production PCs in an enterprise or lab environment, including application installation and configuration.
  • Experience with modern source control and CI/CD tooling such as Git/GitHub plus build and deployment pipelines.
  • Proven ability to build automation or internal tools that improve software deployment, configuration management, or environment reliability.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a complex environment while managing multiple projects with clear priorities and deliverables.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • M.S.E. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Battery systems product development, test lab, or test automation experience
  • Experience administering or supporting test automation systems, e.g. A&D iTest, AVL Lynx, LabView, TestStand, Veristand
  • Experience with software change control, release management, and CI/CD using the Git ecosystem (e.g. GitHub Enterprise)
  • Experience with Agile methodology and associated tools, e.g. Jira, GitHub, Confluence
  • Experience working with time series databases and related tooling, e.g. InfluxDB, Prometheus, Diadem, Grafana
  • Experience planning and executing software environment migrations (e.g. source control platform changes, license server updates, large-scale OS or application upgrades) in production or test environments
  • Experience automating and managing fleets of lab or test PCs using tools such as Baramundi or Ansible, including standard images, configuration baselines, plus clear operational runbooks
  • Experience partnering with central IT or infrastructure teams in a large enterprise to implement local solutions that align with enterprise standards
