We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale..

About the Role:

Low Voltage (12/48V) Motor Technical Specialist (LVM TS)

At this level, the Technical Specialist operates with a high degree of independent judgment and is responsible for implementing functional strategy, coordinating programs, and advising management. As a fully qualified individual contributor with deep expertise in electric motors and related systems, the LVM TS provides expert judgment for the design, development, and implementation of technical products and systems. The role resolves highly complex technical issues, conducts advanced research, recommends improvements to product and process design, and often leads and directs the work of others. A high degree of creativity, technical proficiency, and latitude is expected.

Role Overview:

The Low Voltage (12/48V) Motor Technical Specialist (LVM TS) will drive innovation and commonization of electric motor solutions (non-propulsion) across subsystems, organizations, and suppliers to reduce cost, mass, and complexity while improving quality, fuel economy, EV range, and CO₂ footprint. This work supports increasing industry demands for CO₂ reduction, EV range improvements, optimized and efficient EP vehicle loads, and improved QRD performance, aligned with GM’s vision of Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage the strategic direction of non-propulsion electric motors for various automotive subsystems/applications.

  • Translate strategy into actionable plans through the planning, definition, and development of deployable innovative electric motor technologies.

  • Engineer technical solutions for current and future programs related to electric motors.

  • Support development of long-term strategies and technology roadmaps for electric motors.

  • Lead motor initiatives across multiple SMTs and partner with cross-functional organizations, including sourcing, for electric motors in various 12V subsystems.

  • Advise and support cross-SMT application engineers in executing the global electric motor strategy.

  • Support the generation, development, implementation, and evaluation of new electric motor feature concepts.

  • Develop technical specifications for electric motors and actuators based on feature and system requirements.

  • Drive commonization of motor applications by studying supplier motor portfolios and BOMs to reuse standalone motors or components across applications.

  • Collaborate with Purchasing and teardown specialists to ensure internal GM motor cost estimation strategies are aligned with supplier cost strategies.

  • Collaborate with the electric power organization to optimize power consumption strategies for motor applications and reduce load on charging system components.

  • Participate in the resolution of field issues related to electric motors and actuators; determine root cause and recommend corrective actions.

  • Provide leadership and support to product development teams as an advocate for electric motor technology integration and coordination with suppliers.

  • Work with Purchasing to assess motor supplier capabilities.

  • Lead motor supplier development activities, including technical reviews.

  • Develop and administer technical evaluations of motor suppliers and motors across SMTs.

  • Develop and maintain a preferred motor suppliers list for cross-SMT applications.

  • Review Interface Control Design (ICD) strategies and templates.

  • Stay current on advanced electric motor technologies (brushed and brushless) and competitive products to integrate low-cost, efficient electromechanical motors into GM systems.

  • Travel to motor supplier engineering and manufacturing locations as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • BSEE required; MSEE with focus in Electric Machines/Drives preferred.

  • 3+ years of automotive experience.

  • Excellent communication and project management skills.

  • Knowledge of automotive subsystems utilizing low-voltage electric motors.

  • Knowledge of electromechanical design, operation, and performance characteristics of DC brushed and brushless motors for automotive applications.

  • Understanding of power electronic circuitry and control techniques for DC brushed/brushless motor speed and torque control.

  • Strong competence in writing and comprehending technical requirements.

  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively in cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to engineer and/or manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results.

  • Ability to seek and integrate knowledge from diverse sources to perform tasks effectively.

  • High levels of initiative and proactivity.

  • Ability to communicate ideas, plans, and results effectively through presentations and written reports.

  • Proven ability to work effectively with peers, management, operations groups, and external organizations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing system and component-level DFMEAs.

  • Knowledge of electromagnetic FEA analysis of electric machines.

  • Knowledge of Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) and REE requirements.

  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability and low-cost manufacturing of electric motors.

  • Working knowledge of automotive component and system-level test plans, including EMC testing.

  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art CAE tools and methods for electromagnetic, thermal, and durability analysis and testing of mechatronic systems.

  • Knowledge of Ansys, MATLAB, and Simulink for electrical simulations.

  • Experience with DNG, Jira, and motor controls.

  • Strong analytical ability to solve unusual and complex problems.

  • Proven structural and forward-thinking mindset, strong teamwork orientation, and proactive learning approach.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
