The Role
AVD Brake Subsystem Architect
Serve as an AVD designing engineer and the technical lead for a team of Brake engineers in the advanced development of passenger vehicles and light trucks. The role focuses on successful definition of requirements, design, analysis, performance & compartment integration in combination with meeting all imperatives.
Candidates need to be familiar with GM’s advanced development process as well as the broader vehicle development process – design, development, and validation.
Responsibilities of this position will demand a unique combination of technical strength and team leadership abilities as well as creativity, organizational agility, and a considerable level of initiative and independent judgment.
What You'll Do
- Guide team in the development of detailed, clean-sheet brake component and sub-system designs
- Meet math and part design deliverables on time and with excellence, consistent with performance, cost, mass, investment, and quality requirements
- Lead regular Team ‘Design Review’ Meetings, promoting and verifying subsystem design robustness – delivering relevant technical training, driving program and subsystem communications, ensuring on-time high-quality completion of standard deliverables (e.g. Design Development Reviews, Advanced Master Parts List, Engineering Logbook, Find the Floor, DFMEA, e-Peer Review, Math Sync/VVA, CAE evaluation, etc.)
- Drive action plan generation and follow-up for major ongoing issues, reporting status to AVD Core PDT
- Act as the technical point of contact for AVD Brake Systems, answering questions from APEMs, other SMTs, AVSEs, Perf Integration, etc. on new content and new programs prior to DE assignment
- Complete feasibility studies for upcoming/proposed vehicle programs, evaluating potential design alternatives, recommending program direction based on cost, mass, timing and customer needs
- Facilitate ATW insertion and support design-tool development and rollout
- Drive collaboration between Chassis Designing Engineers, ETL, TSs, as well as other key areas of the organization (CAE, Vehicle Architecture, Cost Estimating, Performance Integration, Manufacturing, Service Engineering, Body, HVAC, Powertrain, etc.) to creatively and jointly develop the optimal overall vehicle solution
- Support downstream release community by ensuring design maturity at program transition and providing sourcing inputs while delivering systems prepared for development, validation and production
- Attend Brake Systems ETL meetings as AVD representative
- Translate lessons learned into best practices
- Complete the technical mentoring of other less experienced AVD DEs, and support technical training plans for new-hires in the AVD Brake Community
- Support/Lead peer reviews and supplier technical reviews
- Drive communication/awareness of new technology
- Oversee the brake team’s development and maintenance of UG Math in TeamCenter environment
- Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations
