Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, Michigan three times per week, at minimum.

The Role: 

GM is undergoing a major transformation—reimagining how we operate and shaping the future of transportation through electrification, autonomous technology, and software-defined vehicles (SDVs). At the heart of this transformation is our Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) team, leading the charge with high-impact innovation and cutting-edge software development. VMEC Battery and High Voltage Agile Release Train (BHV ART) is responsible for end-to-end High Voltage Battery Systems Controls and Software products for all GM EV and (P)HEV. We are a highly capable engineering team that focuses on delivering products with quality, scalability, agility and customer value added excellence; and we continue to grow, innovate & excel together as one team.

We are looking for a high performing Functional System Architect (FSA) to steer architectural vision and solution context for the BHV ART. Your seasoned expertise in the electrification domain will fuel the design and evolution of software components such as high voltage contactor controls, energy management, battery state estimation, wireless and wired sensing, and vehicular diagnostics, ensuring seamless integration and interaction with the hardware components within the automotive embedded domain.

What You’ll Do: 

Own the vision:

  • Own and understand the solution context, acting as the “Chief Architect” for the functional subsystems of the ART. 

  • Develop and drive the requirements architectural vision and ART Solution context for BHV ART, connecting desired functionality to software implementation.

  • Champion rolldown from FTS, STS, Portfolio Epic, Product Team as applicable and create requirements architecture for designated domain.

  • Ensure seamless integration and interaction between ART solutions and hardware components within the designated domain.

  • Lead contact DRI for BHV Engineering Pillar of the High Voltage Product Team.

  • Define the ART functional architecture vision and feature / epic decomposition in collaboration with the Product Team members (Product Manager, Program Manager, System Engineer, Technical Specialists). Contribute to refining the priority of work for the engineering teams.

  • Define the solution context including supporting technologies, solution interfaces, APIs, current and future deployment requirements, and functional and non-functional requirements

  • Lead and Prioritization of TFRP roadmap with Systems Engineering organization & Product Team

  • Pursue and support innovation opportunities in domain of responsibility.

  • Own the FMEA cross functional linkage

  • Develop/approve system architecture requirements, models, and diagrams; spearhead architecture level development and testing. 

  • Oversee life cycle engineering activities, work with requirements engineers at program initiation, and ensure consistency and traceability of system requirements. 

  • Ensure validation strategies are robust, cost-effective, and in compliance with quality requirements.

  • Lead technical solutions discussions,  product demonstrations, and report out to leadership

Disseminate the vision:

  • Guide the dispersion of requirements work with SSLEs in accordance with scrum responsibility and technical ownership.

  • Lead, mentor, and coach SSLEs in developing requirements.

  • Support SSTS technical requirements development and BTS behavioral (G/W/T) requirements development according to the BDD process.

  • Collaborate with Global Technical Specialists, SSLEs, Cal TS, Diagnostic System Architects and Software Architects to flow down requirements architecture to ART features.  FSA to enable story creation so they are implemented and deployed. 

  • Provide technical direction and guidance to agile teams throughout all phases of ART processes

Support the vision:

  • Subject Matter Expert for the requirements architecture and resource for the ART for domain of responsibility.

  • Offer technical guidance for SSLEs and Development Scrums including support of Model-Based System Engineering requirement management, associated tool chains, diagnostic development, FMEA development, and acceptance criteria definitions.

  • Attend key ART and scrum meetings as a part of agile software development.

  • Support in building Sub-System/Solution level requirements and validating system performance against these requirements.

  • Collaborate with Product Team to review and update backlog of work, determine technical feasibility, and work estimate sizing/workload estimation

  • Support resolution of critical functional, regulatory, compliance, and customer satisfaction issues that impact architecture.

  • Facilitate the closure of PRTS’s related to requirements.

  • Actively participate in Communities of Practice (CoP).

  • Offer technical guidance for the area of expertise, execute Epics, help resolve/close PRTSs, share lessons learned/best practices, and capture IP/ROI’s/etc. 

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) ​​: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, electronics, automotive, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field required. 

  • 7+ years of engineering experience related to embedded control systems, software, electrification, calibration, related hardware, and/or safety critical system development, system engineering.

  • ​Good understanding of software development process and best practices.

  • Experience with requirements development and automotive system engineering and architecture.

  • Experience in Electrification domains.

  • Proficiency in embedded controls and software architecture and design trade-offs.

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others. 

  • Ability to think critically and provide effective solution to complex issue.   

  • Ability to prioritize work with only limited direction from manager. 

  • Ability to train/mentor others.

  • High level of oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate intent to leadership and technical details to executing teams. 

  • Skills to work cooperatively/collaboratively with adjacent teams such as Architecture, Controls, Software, and Hardware teams, both within and outside the home organization.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) ​: 

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Engineering with a focus on Controls/Electrical Engineering/Computer Science. 

  • 10+ years of engineering experience related to embedded control systems, software, electrification, calibration, related hardware, and/or safety critical system development, system engineering.

  • Experience successfully leading activities/projects with high levels of ambiguity.

  • Proficiency in SAFe/Agile processes, showcasing a balanced approach to project management and execution in a multifaceted, cross-functional environment.

  • Experience with Requirements management tools (i.e. GitHub, DNG, Doors).

  • 2+ years’ experience in embedded controls and software. 

  • Familiarity with SDV Architecture.

  • Demonstrated ability to: achieve results through effective teamwork, lead projects with different focal areas to successful completion, and manage and measure work through metrics, data, and results.

  • Deep familiarity and understanding with embedded software, systems engineering, mechatronic architecture, testing automation frameworks and/or build deployment.

  • Working knowledge of embedded controls development tool set – (e.g. Jira/Jira Cloud, GIT ecosystem, INCA, etc. ).

  • Working experience leveraging data & AI tools in problem solving.

  • Strong leadership, proactiveness and growth mindset.
