The Role
General Motors is seeking a Power Electronics EMC Technical Specialist to lead electromagnetic compatibility engineering for Power Electronics & Traction Inverter hardware. The successful candidate will apply advanced knowledge of electromagnetic interference, electromagnetic susceptibility, signal and power integrity, high-voltage power electronics, and vehicle-level electrical integration to guide robust designs from concept through production.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. The specialist will influence architecture and design decisions, develop practical mitigation strategies, lead root-cause investigations, and partner with internal engineering teams, suppliers, test organizations, and program leadership. The role is hybrid and based at the GM Global Technical Center — Estes Engineering Center.
What You’ll Do
- Define and lead EMC design strategies for Power Electronics & Traction Inverters, including requirements decomposition, risk assessment, design development, peer reviews, and validation planning.
- Define design best practices to mitigate system level interactions between component EMC performance and vehicle level EMC requirements.
- Develop and apply electromagnetic models and analysis methods to predict coupling paths, resonances, common-mode and differential-mode behavior, shielding effectiveness, grounding performance, and conducted and radiated emissions, both at the component level & at the vehicle level
- Guide Power Electronics & Traction Inverter hardware design decisions involving power modules, busbars, laminated interconnects, gate-drive circuits, printed circuit boards, enclosures, filters, shielding, grounding, cables, and connectors.
- Lead EMC mitigation activities across the design lifecycle, balancing electrical performance, thermal performance, packaging, manufacturability, reliability, cost, and timing.
- Responsible for development of EMC load box and EMC test plan per GMW3097.
- Schedule, execute, and document traction inverter EMC testing. Lead PRTS closure through structured root-cause investigations for electromagnetic interference and susceptibility issues, using measurement data, simulation, design-of-experiments, and engineering judgment.
- Establish technical countermeasures and confirm effectiveness through focused testing and correlation between models, bench results, dynamometer testing, and vehicle testing.
- Develop and maintain EMC operating-mode tracker covering charging, driving, V2L/V2G, AC/DC charging, inverter operation, and simultaneous APM/OBCM operation. Support EMC debugging for combined operation
- Partner with Power Electronics & Traction Inverter design release engineering, controls and software, electrical architecture, vehicle integration, validation, reliability, manufacturing, purchasing, and supplier engineering teams.
- Analyze grounding, shielding, cable routing and connector locations. Resolve vehicle-to-vehicle EMC variation.
- Provide technical direction to suppliers and evaluate supplier EMC capability, analysis methods, test plans, design evidence, and corrective actions.
- Review and approve EMC-related requirements, specifications, EMC test plan, EMC load box, drawings, analysis reports, test procedures, test reports, and design changes.
- Create reusable EMC guidelines, checklists, modeling practices, and lessons learned for future Power Electronics & Traction Inverter programs.
- PRTS ownership of EMC non-compliance related to OBCM component and AC charging system. Lead OBCM troubleshooting/scheduling plan with vehicle EMC team. Communicate technical risks, decisions, trade-offs, and recommendations to engineering and program leadership.
- Mentor engineers and raise the organization’s capability in power-electronics EMC design and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related discipline.
- 8+ years of relevant hands-on hardware experience with high-voltage power electronics, AC/DC and DC/DC converters, inverters, or electric-drive systems
- Strong Expertise in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), including, high-voltage AC conducted emissions and Radiated Emission compliance, Electromagnetic immunity/susceptibility, common-mode and differential-mode noise suppression, grounding, shielding, filtering, impedance, and signal/power integrity analysis.
- Significant experience designing, analyzing, or validating EMC performance for power electronics, electric drives, Power Electronics & Traction Inverters, converters, or similar high-power systems.
- Demonstrated expertise in electromagnetic interference and susceptibility mechanisms, including conducted and radiated coupling, common-mode and differential-mode currents, grounding, shielding, filtering, and cable effects.
- Experience with EMC modeling, simulation, or analytical methods and the ability to correlate predictions with laboratory and vehicle-level measurements.
- Strong understanding of high-voltage power-electronics hardware, including switching devices, power modules, gate drives, bus structures, printed circuit boards, and Power Electronics & Traction Inverter packaging.
- Experience planning, executing, or interpreting EMC testing and resolving failures through data-driven root-cause analysis.
- Ability to lead cross-functional technical decisions and influence internal teams and suppliers without direct authority.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical issues to leadership.
- Willingness to travel periodically to supplier, test, and vehicle-development locations as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree or advanced technical training in electrical engineering, electromagnetics, power electronics, or a related field.
- 10+ years of relevant hands-on hardware experience with high-voltage power electronics, AC/DC and DC/DC converters, inverters, or electric-drive systems
- Experience with automotive electromagnetic compatibility requirements and vehicle-level integration of electric-drive systems.
- Experience with 3D electromagnetic simulation, circuit/system-level modeling, or specialized EMC analysis tools.
- Experience with Power Electronics & Traction Inverter platforms using silicon carbide or other high-speed switching technologies.
- Knowledge of high-voltage safety, functional safety interfaces, electrical transients, signal integrity, and power integrity.
- Experience with design-for-EMC methods applied to high-volume manufacturing and supplier production processes.
- Experience leading EMC issue resolution through design changes, calibration, software coordination, or vehicle integration changes.
- Demonstrated technical publications, patents, conference participation, or recognized contribution to EMC or power-electronics engineering.
Candidate Success Profile
The strongest candidate will combine deep EMC fundamentals with practical power-electronics hardware experience. They will be able to move fluidly between simulation, laboratory measurements, design reviews, supplier discussions, and executive-level risk communication. Success in the first year will include establishing a repeatable Power Electronics & Traction Inverter EMC design and troubleshooting approach, reducing late-cycle EMC surprises, and providing clear technical direction for GM's High Voltage Power Electronics & Traction Inverter programs.
