Hybrid:
This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Warren Technical Center, Warren MI or Milford Proving Grounds, Milford, MI three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.
Our Mission:
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
The Role:
The Software & Electronics Platform team is building the execution foundation for GM’s software-defined electric vehicles. We are looking for a Program Engineering Manager (PEM) to lead end-to-end execution for the EV platform, connecting platform strategy and architecture to integrated software, electronics, vehicle, and launch deliverables.
This role is accountable for making complex work executable. The PEM will establish clear ownership, plans, timing, dependencies, risks, and recovery actions across the platform and relevant vehicle programs. The role will partner closely with the Chief Engineer, senior engineering leaders in VSEE, Product and Platform PMO, Vehicle Program Teams, and cross-functional engineering organizations.
The successful candidate will be equally comfortable setting direction with senior leaders, driving disciplined execution with engineering teams, and developing a high-performing team of APEMs.
What You'll Do:
Lead end-to-end EV platform execution
-
Own the integrated execution plan for EV Software & Electronics Platform content from requirements and architecture through vehicle integration, validation, launch readiness, and post-launch follow-through.
-
Translate platform roadmaps, vehicle content, customer needs, and engineering commitments into executable work with accountable owners, dates, dependencies, decision points, and measurable exit criteria.
-
Coordinate software and hardware deliverables across platform features, ECUs, electrical and logical topology, interfaces, diagnostics, calibration, releases, test assets, and vehicle integration activities.
-
Ensure platform commitments are aligned to Global Vehicle Development Process milestones and protected through clear readiness assessments, risk management, and recovery plans.
-
Balance common-platform reuse with EV vehicle-program needs, including scope, timing, cost, resource capacity, technical debt, and launch risk.
Drive integration, issue ownership, and decisions
-
Establish a single, decision-ready view of cross-platform execution health, including feature readiness, integration dependencies, open issues, risks, mitigations, and milestone confidence.
-
Lead resolution of complex software, electronics, architecture, and vehicle-integration issues that cross organizational or technical boundaries.
-
Drive timely decisions through the appropriate forums, including Core PDTs, PAPIR, Dev/Val, and other escalation forums.
Own launch execution and overall platform readiness
-
Lead platform readiness planning and status through key GVDP and software-quality milestones as applicable to the assigned EV programs.
-
Ensure objective evidence, owners, timing, and countermeasures are in place for platform readiness, Software Quality Readiness Reviews, Program Quality Readiness Reviews, vehicle integration, release completeness, and launch decisions.
-
Drive disciplined management of Vehicle Functionality Readiness Plans (VFRP), Testable Functionality Rollout Plans (TFRP), PRTS/Jira issues, VeSCoM readiness, and SW build factory software-release dependencies
-
Use execution metrics to identify trends early, focus leadership attention, and improve platform health and delivery predictability.
Partner with vehicle teams and cross-functional organizations
-
Serve as a primary platform execution interface to Vehicle Platform Managers, hardware and software Vehicle Program Managers, Software Vehicle Systems Engineers, PLSIE/VSL roles, Vehicle Execution Teams, Product and Platform PMO, and vehicle program leadership.
-
Align platform deliverables to vehicle content plans, vehicle architecture, program timing, build events, test assets, and customer-facing priorities.
-
Communicate a unified Software & Electronics Platform position on readiness, risks, decisions, escalations, and recovery plans.
-
Partner across VSEE, Infotainment and Connectivity, Vehicle Operating System and SoC Platform, Autonomous Vehicle, Mechatronics Infrastructure, hardware, manufacturing, quality, and supplier organizations.
-
Represent the EV platform clearly in senior reviews, converting technical complexity into concise, decision-ready information.
Build and lead a high-performing team
-
Lead, coach, and develop APEM(s) responsible for EV platform execution domains and cross-platform seams.
-
Set clear role boundaries, operating rhythms, priorities, and performance expectations.
-
Build a culture of ownership, urgency, transparency, technical curiosity, and respectful challenge.
-
Develop the team’s capabilities in systems thinking, software and hardware integration, program execution, risk management, executive communication, and GM development processes.
-
Create repeatable standard work for planning, readiness, escalation, decision capture, and execution-health reporting.
-
Recognize and remove organizational friction so the team can spend its time on engineering execution and delivery.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
-
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
-
Demonstrated experience (8+ years) leading complex, cross-functional engineering or vehicle-program execution from plan through delivery.
-
Experience integrating software and electronics across vehicle systems, embedded platforms, ECUs, networks, controls, or related products.
-
Experience managing technical dependencies, milestone readiness, risks, recovery plans, escalations, and executive-level decisions.
-
Demonstrated ability to lead through influence across multiple organizations with shared accountability.
-
Experience developing people, setting expectations, and building a high-performing engineering or program-management team.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make complex technical topics clear and actionable.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills):
-
Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
-
Demonstrated experience (10+ years) leading complex, cross-functional engineering or vehicle-program execution from plan through delivery.
-
Experience with electric-vehicle platforms, including charging and energy, propulsion, vehicle motion, low-voltage systems, or other EV-critical domains.
-
Experience with software-defined vehicle architectures, centralized or high-performance compute platforms, vehicle networks, OTA delivery, diagnostics, or vehicle-level integration.
-
Experience working across vehicle software, vehicle electronics, hardware, systems engineering, validation, manufacturing, quality, and supplier organizations.
-
Track record of improving execution systems, metrics, operating rhythms, or organizational clarity in a complex technical environment.
How Success Will Be Measured:
-
EV platform commitments have clear owners, integrated plans, dependencies, exit criteria, and credible timing.
-
Readiness risks are identified and surfaced early, accompanied by actionable recovery plans, and escalated at the right time.
-
Cross-platform issues move rapidly from ambiguity to accountable ownership, decision, implementation, and verified closure.
-
Platform software and electronics deliverables are aligned to vehicle-program milestones and launch needs.
-
Senior leaders and partner organizations receive a consistent, fact-based view of platform health and execution confidence.
-
The PEM/APEM team operates with strong ownership, effective standard work, and increasing independence.
-
The team improves execution predictability while maintaining focus on safety, quality, customer value, cost, and delivery.
