The Role
GM is seeking an Environmental Leader who is passionate about leading environmental operations across non-manufacturing facilities throughout Canada. In this role, you will provide strategic and technical leadership for environmental compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement across a diverse portfolio of facilities and activities.
You will work as part of the Global Environmental Operations organization and partner with facilities, engineering, maintenance, construction, real estate, safety, and business teams to support all applicable environmental media. You will engage subject matter experts, contractors, regulators, and site personnel to evaluate risks, develop practical solutions, and implement programs that improve environmental performance and operational resilience.
Key responsibilities will include leading environmental compliance activities; maintaining and improving management systems and site programs; supporting internal and external audits; evaluating new and existing equipment, projects, and activities for environmental requirements; coordinating routine and periodic monitoring and testing; and ensuring that corrective actions are effectively addressed and sustained.
The Environmental Leader will also help build organizational capability by sharing environmental knowledge, coaching stakeholders, strengthening standards and procedures, and promoting consistent practices across non-manufacturing locations. The successful candidate will bring sound technical judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to influence outcomes in a complex, cross-functional environment while advancing GM’s commitment to environmental stewardship and continuous improvement.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Air

Ensure sites meet all regulatory requirements as it relates to equipment operating conditions, emissions modeling, change management, EASR requirements where applicable, and regulatory reporting.

Review and validate new chemicals or process changes meet regulatory guidelines.

Track completion of preventative maintenance on key equipment.
Waste
-
Ensure the sites meet all regulatory requirements pertaining to waste.

Provide contract management oversite to the Woodstock PDC Resource Manager including safety oversight, annual budgeting, invoice tracking and more.

Ensure all waste being generated as part of the operations is appropriately characterized
-
Execute waste shipments for non-manufacturing sites across Canada in accordance with provincial and federal regulations.

Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives that improve the sites diversion rate, drive down non-diverted waste totals, and help meet the site’s Zero Waste objectives.
Water
-
Ensure the site(s) meets all Environmental Compliance Approval requirements where applicable as it relates to storm and sanitary water management.

Support continued compliance of sanitary water discharge with local by-law limits

Coordinating annual drinking water sampling to comply with GM requirements.
ISO14001 Environmental Management System

Maintain each site’s certified ISO14001 Environmental Management System
-
Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives, employee environmental training, and develop standardized work as it relates to the site’s significant environmental aspects.

Schedule and lead both internal and external ISO14001 audits, tracking any findings to completion.

Maintain the robust library of Task Instruction Sheets, Procedures, and Forms associated with the EMS and each site.
Other
-
Ensure the site is in compliance with all tank related regulations as applicable at the site (LFHC, FOC, FC, etc.)

Provide 24/7 environmental emergency response support to the site, and complete follow up corrective action as required.

Plan and/or participate in environmental community outreach events that help support the site’s employee engagement and sustainable culture, and engage local conservation groups.

Develop project bid documents (SOW, Budget, etc.) to support the funding and execution of projects that eliminate environmental risk.

Complete and submit reports to comply with various Provincial refrigerant/ODS regulation
-
Inspect and coordinate maintenance of monitoring wells as required.

Assess new products to determine Environmental Handling Charges
Additional Job Description

This role is based out of the Oshawa Elevation Center and requires a minimum of 3 days per week on-site.
-
This role requires some travel, with monthly trips to sites within driving distance, with the potential for travel to the more remote sites 1-2 times per year.
Qualifications
-
Experience in environmental engineering or related science or engineering field and experience in manufacturing preferred.
-
Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree is preferred, preferably in engineering or related environmental sciences; P. Eng preferred.
-
3 years Envisronmental experience in a similar role.
-
Demonstrated understanding of provincial, federal and municipal environmental regulations and the ability to interpret how those regulations apply to site operations and activities.
-
Demonstrated expertise in at least one environmental media preferred (air permits and regulation, water permits and regulation, and/or waste regulations).
-
Expertise to investigate complex environmental problems and apply sound technical judgment to develop possible solutions (e.g., complicated air permitting or regulatory issue, significant waste issue, significant water permitting or compliance issue).

Highly developed oral and written communications skills.
-
Experience with analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate complex data or situations so that others, including senior leadership, can comprehend, respond and contribute.

High level of enthusiasm, persistence, leadership ability, initiative, and experienced judgment to identify priorities, initiate projects, and complete activities in a timely fashion.

Experience working externally with regulators or other public or private sector individuals.

Cross-functionally minded, with an ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
-
Must have a valid full G Canadian driver’s license.
Compensation
The salary range for this role is $76,100.00 to $114,300.00. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
