As a 2027 Summer Intern – IndyCar Trackside Engineering, you will support Chevrolet’s IndyCar competition program through data-driven vehicle-performance analysis, engineering preparation, and technical problem solving. Working from the Charlotte Technical Center, you will help convert vehicle, simulation, and race-event data into clear engineering insights and recommendations for the trackside engineering organization. This position does not require travel.

The Team:

The IndyCar Trackside Engineering group supports Chevrolet teams and internal engineering partners by preparing performance analyses, engineering tools, and technical recommendations for competition. The team works across vehicle performance, data analysis, race engineering, powertrain, strategy, and partner-team interfaces to identify performance opportunities and help deliver reliable, competitive race cars. The intern will contribute to trackside engineering activities from the Charlotte Technical Center and collaborate with experienced motorsports professionals.

What You’ll Do:

• Analyze vehicle-performance, telemetry, simulation, and historical race data to identify trends, performance gaps, and opportunities for improvement.

• Support preparation of pre-event analyses, engineering reports, setup comparisons, and post-event summaries for the IndyCar program.

• Develop and maintain analysis tools, dashboards, and repeatable workflows using appropriate engineering and data-analysis methods.

• Assist with investigations involving vehicle dynamics, tire performance, fuel efficiency, race strategy, reliability, and other competition-relevant topics.

• Organize technical information and communicate findings clearly through concise presentations, written reports, and engineering reviews.

• Collaborate with race engineers, vehicle-performance engineers, powertrain partners, and internal GM engineering teams while maintaining data quality and confidentiality.

• Contribute to a safety-focused, disciplined, and continuous-improvement-oriented motorsports environment.

Required Qualifications:

• Pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in:

  • mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, data science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field.

• Must be graduating between December 2027 and June 2029.

• Able to work full-time, 40 hours per week during the summer months.

• Able to work onsite on a full-time basis at the Charlotte Technical Center.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with vehicle-performance analysis, motorsports, automotive engineering, or another high-performance engineering environment.

• Experience using Excel, Python, MATLAB, or similar tools to analyze and visualize engineering data.

• Coursework or project experience in vehicle dynamics, data acquisition, controls, powertrain, simulation, or race engineering.

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, detail-oriented environment.

• Hands-on experience with engineering projects, laboratory testing, or technical data collection.
