Work Arrangement:
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Milford, MI or Warren, MI three times per week.
The Role:
The OTA Quality Engineer is a key technical leader supporting enterprise wide Over the Air (OTA) software update performance, triage, and quality execution across current and emerging vehicle platforms. This role blends hands on problem solving with systems level thinking, focusing on integration, troubleshooting, data analysis, and disciplined execution to ensure first time quality, efficient issue resolution, and robust OTA performance in fleet, development, and plant environments.
The engineer will serve as a central connection point across software integration, deployment, vehicle teams, ECU owners, and quality organizations to help deliver secure, reliable updates for VIP and SDV platforms. This role works closely with the OTA Vehicle System Engineers (VSE) team and Engineering Group Leaders to align OTA strategy with program objectives, ensure OTA readiness, drive real time triage and resolution of issues during OTA events, and enable robust delivery and closed loop learning from development updates through launch and in field performance.
The position is hybrid based at Milford Proving Ground and the Warren Technical Center, supporting frequent vehicle and bench investigations, root cause, and verification.
What You'll Do:
- Perform as an OTA quality, performance, and triage engineer across vehicle programs, with ownership of OTA programming from early development through launch and alignment of OTA performance expectations across the organization.
- Manage the technical resolution and troubleshooting of issues stemming from OTA CTFs, fleet triage, development vehicles, vehicle plants, and the broader car park, acting as a core member of the OTA problem resolution / triage team and supporting vehicle data acquisition and CGM / CAN log analysis.
- Partner with ECU DREs, software integration (VeSCoM, VESCOM Verification), OTA Deployment Operations, and the OTA subsystem / component organization to ensure OTA issues are captured and understood in requirements, CGs, test cases, and verification plans, including related PRTSs and read across.
- Oversee triage, root cause, and resolution of OTA performance issues across vehicle software, OTA engines (CGM, TCP, VCU), back office, connectivity, parts authoring, 12V parasitic concerns, and other factors impacting OTA quality.
- Collaborate closely with Vehicle Update Services integration teams (CGM, TCP, VCU), other ECU teams (for example ACP, EBCM), development teams, brand quality managers, field service engineers, and OTA customer service engineers to ensure OTA performance targets are achieved in benches, CTF fleets, and customer vehicles.
- Contribute to the deployment and use of OTA component tester tools, system benches, CVF benches, CTF fleets, development vehicles, vehicle automation, and emerging tester tools to expand exposure, automation, stress testing, and edge case coverage.
- Partner with the OTA VSE and Engineering Group Leader to execute OTA readiness plans, monitor VeSCoM campaign performance, define and prioritize strategic OTA initiatives (for example Eliminate CAT9, VESCOM Verification, SDV2.0 readiness), and support multi functional resolution of issues surfaced during development and update campaigns.
- Support continuous improvement and formalization of OTA standard work, triage methods, dashboards, and metrics, including review of new requirements (for example SDV2.0, CGM enhancements, OBD) and evolution of test methodologies to drive holistic test plans and closed loop learning into upstream development and validation processes.
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field.
- 5 or more years of experience in software development, validation, quality, integration, triage, or software program management.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across embedded systems or vehicle architectures, including ability to interpret logs and technical data, with working knowledge of vehicle networking and reflash concepts (for example CAN, UDS, DoIP or similar) and interest in deepening OTA expertise.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating across multiple teams, with strong project management and organizational skills to manage priorities and drive timely closure on complex technical issues.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize complex technical issues for diverse audiences.
- Willingness and ability to travel 10 to 20 percent between Milford, Warren, and vehicle plants as required to support testing and triage.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- 2 or more years of experience in automotive software development, validation, or software program management with direct exposure to OTA or vehicle programming.
- Hands on experience with OTA update flows and tools, with demonstrated understanding of end to end OTA events from software creation and deployment through in vehicle behavior, customer experience, and post event diagnostics.
- Strong working knowledge of the end to end OTA system across in vehicle controllers and cloud services, including how modules such as CGM, TCP, VCU, and back office services interact to deliver, execute, and confirm vehicle updates.
- Practical experience with reflash and diagnostics protocols such as UDS, DoIP, CAN and associated tooling for troubleshooting update failures, plus exposure to SDV architectures, VIP or SDV platforms, and the role of OTA in enabling frequent and secure software delivery.
- Experience building or using automation frameworks for OTA quality checks, stress testing, and robustness verification (for example Python, Selenium, CAPL, AUTOBOT, or similar tools), along with familiarity with data, logging, and dashboarding tools used to monitor OTA campaign performance and triage trends.
- Experience using OTA deployment and quality tools such as GSPAS, VSMS based dashboards, and related systems to track campaign readiness, execution status, and issue convergence.
- Prior involvement in cross functional triage teams or PRC/PRTS ownership related to OTA, vehicle programming, or ECU software issues, and experience supporting or partnering with teams such as OTA VSE, Vehicle Update Services, VESCOM Verification, or software integration organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor peers and influence across functions without direct authority, with strong project management and troubleshooting skills, highly effective interpersonal skills (mentoring, coaching, collaborating, team building), and sound judgment to assess importance, urgency, and risk and make timely decisions in the best interests of the organization.
